    well...

    The windows security cener keeps saying that my antivirus (Avira btw) is not on, but when I test it by making a file that consists of
    and save that as a .exe file I get a popup, or 4 to be precise..., that says A virus or unwanted program was found.

    so it seems that it actually is on. does anyone know why windows would say its off?

    Have you tried this;
    1 Stop the "Windows Management Instrumentation" service. (type services in search and click Enter to go to services).
    2 Locate the folder "repository" in c:\windows\system32\wbem. Delete only the repository folder.
    3 Now start the "WMI" service back on.
    4 Wait for at least 15 mins for the system to rebuild the information.
    5 Now reboot and open the security center. If it's not turned ON, turn ON and you will have the right info there.
    Cheers.
