I have got Eset Nod 32 only AV version.
    The question is:

    - Leave Vista's Firewall & Defender OR disable them and pick up Threatfire ?

I use NOD 32 AV + Windows Defender and Firewall. If you have a router, it's already plenty.

yep i have a router - Zyxel P-660HTW. i just remember that someone told Windows Defender and Firewall are crappy and could somehow slow down a system.

Windows Defender has never done anything for me; it's the first thing I disable. The Vista firewall is better than the XP predecessor, although I still see no reason to use it when free alternatives such as Comodo are far more secure for the average user.

No, neither are very good. Vista's firewall is only decent if you:

    1. Have Vista Business
    2. Know how to configure it for all current threats and possible future threats (in other words, it's practically impossible)

I suggest you disable those programs. Pick up Comodo and Super Anti Spyware. Both programs are free and offer great protection.

Vista firewall is quite good inbound, and marginally adequate outbound. Defender is good considering what you paid for it. Most firewalls will (at least optionally, if not explicitly) disable other firewalls; it is not a good idea to have more than one active at a time. See my setup for what I use.

I'd think if anything, since WD and WF are built into the OS, they would be faster than a 3rd party app.

I have NOD32, along with Vista Defender (Windows Firewall disabled in favor of NOD32). On my brand new desktop (750 GB HDD, 4 GB RAM), Threatfire locked up my system consistently till I removed it. There had to be some conflict there.

If you have NOD32; the AV program from Eset, you must enable Windows Firewall asap.
If you have the Eset Security Suite you're good. ;)
    Cheers.

faster compared to what? not sure what you mean. I never thought of FW's being fast and if a program is not as good, what difference would being fast mean?

I was replying to a previous poster saying that WD and WF may slow a system down.

I run NOD 32 + windows firewall and windows defender.

Few years back windows defender used to be microsoft anti-spyware, well before that it was GIANT anti-spyware which was an exceptional spyware at the time before M$ bought them out.

I was also a big fan of EWIDO which is now AVG anti-spyware.

Windows firewall and defender with any AV besides Norton or McAfee are OK
