I've recently had a Windows Security Alert pop up on my task bar. When I click on it, it says I have no Malware protection. I have AVG Free on my system and it's always showed up before. I also have the default Windows Defender, in addition to Spyware Blaster installed. According to Windows Security Center, no antivirus software can be found on my computer and it shows Windows Defender is turned off.

If I try to turn Windows Defender on, a window pops up saying it's looking for updates then it can't find any newer updates but it still never turns Windows Defender on. Something has gotten screwed up at some point and I haven't done anything to my system or installed anything whatsoever in recent history that should've caused this. I have no idea what is causing the problem or what I might do to fix it.

The WSC in vista is buggy. To manually correct the problem,

1.Stop the "Windows Management Instrumentation" service. (type services in search and click enter to go to services).

    2. Locate the folder "repository" in c:\windows\system32\wbem. Delete only the repository folder.

    3. Now start the "WMI" service back.

    4. Wait for atleast 15-20 mins for the system to rebuild the information.

    5. Now reboot and open the security center. If it's not turned ON, turn ON and you will have the right info there.

Thanks for that advice! unfortunately it hasn't helped, when I try to stop the Winmgmt service under "Services' it won't let me and says 'Access is denied'.

Very strange as I am the Admin of my own laptop!!!!! I've Googled the problem and haven't found a solution. Sorry to be a pain, thanks so much for the help!!

Try running the "services" as an administrator. Right click "services" the select "run as admin". You can also disable UAC.
