Defender is an antispyware program so yes you should still use an antivirus program too.

You can eliminate Windows Defender from your computer. Use AVG Anti-spyware instead of Defender.

& it's hard as hell to remove.
It can also cause problems with other programs as well.

AVG antispyware free version doesn't have real-time spyware protection which is absolutely needed.

Defender is useless, just uninstall it and use Ad-aware and spybot for your scans.

The free version of Ad-aware doesn't have real-time protection either. I'm not sure about Spybot... but I am curious... does Spybot do real-time protection?

I don't think it's supposed to be called real-time persay but there's a thing called Tea Timer which is supposed to watch your files and make sure nothing can change. Like defense+ of comodo pro, or threatfire.

If you're looking for active protectionish, more some preventative spyware programs, check out winpatrol and spyware blaster.

I use AVG free, Windows Defender, I have Adaware and run sometimes, I have AOL system scan, Windows firewall. People can talk about how some AV is better than AVG free and I am not going to argue because they may be correct. But I want to say you have to be a complete dunderheaded fool to need that small extra level of protection others offer. If you actually don't do stupid things you do not even need virus protection. So learn how to not press on things that say "free stuff" & "free porn" "you have been selected to win". I guess all I am saying is paying for protection is like paying the MOB! I don't do it. Went 8 years without AV, I know when and where I get spyware and I control it and get rid of when needed. AV is overated use common sense.

but i suppose it is not necessary to fully remove it as disabling it works well.

Yeah, and thanks to those articles i was able to remove some other bloatware that was loading up on system startup and now i'm usually running under 700MB ram.
