Windows 7 memory diagnostics tool issues

Hello, i am very very novice when it comes to computers, I have a Sony vaio vpcec 490x, I am having some slight issues with freezing and long load times, I have been trying to use the vaio care center diagnostics and decided to run a memory diagnosis test, it starts fine but after running for a while it locks up in test pass 1 at 21% complete with the overall test status at 10%. It just stays there for hours with no further progress. I can hit escape and return to windows. But when I try to run it again it does the same thing in the exact same place. Is this an issue I should be worried about? What can I do to remedy this issue. Any help I can get. Would be greatly appreciated, doubly if you can put it in simple form so I can understand with my very limited skills.

that could be a ram problem or hard drive problem.

try these tests

First MemTest MemTest: RAM reliability tester for Windows to check your ram

and then HD Tune HD Tune website to check your hard drive. run the full sector test which will take an hour or so but will find any bad sectors.
