I will be upgrading my x64 laptop to Windows 7 when I receive my CD from MS next month.

I currently use Avira and my license expires Nov 09. On the Avira website they advise you
that it is not compatable with Windows 7, however, I have read several posts that it will indeed
    function with Windows 7.

I am debating a change to Norton 2010 or AVG. My experience with Norton was not very
favorable, load time, so I am leaning towards AVG.

I would request from the group your opinion of what would be the most efficient security system to install for Windows 7.

    Thanks

imo nis2010 is way better than avg is. did you use the 2009 or 2010 versions. they use far less resources than avg and every computer i have worked on that we removed avg and others from and installed nis 2009 or 2010 just ran far better overall. nis 2009 is fully 64bit okay with win 7 but not 32bit. 2010 is fine with either one.

i have not personally seen any real issues with avira and win7 either. i love avira av but its not as good at cleaning after the fact imo and the nis firewall is much better overall than the avira one. avira does have a bit better detection so they are both good. i would stay far away from avg anymore to many issues and to many fp's

I would never use Norton! There's so many things wrong with the program that I wont have the time to write it down. You could go for AVG as you mentioned in your post but somehow AVG tends to miss some viruses, but most people are actually pleased with AVG.

if at the release of win7, microsofts own virescanner isn't out yet, i'd take avast antivir, as i've used it successfully on different systems so far.

i would not pay for norton, norman, symantec, or what ever.., as i don't like nor trust those companies.

actually, i'd say, you don't need a virescanner at all anymore. even people at microsoft say, since vista, the os is actually so selfaware and selfprotecting that it shouldn't need an active running vire scanner. they can't promote this to the common user, of course.

^^^^^ lol... the way i feel about avg... just shows how much it is a personal decision as well as functional. just like i will not use eset period now. unless they step up and fix the same issues people have been complaining about since version 3 its just not worth the hassle.

edit: actually just now today i have a customers pc that is BADLY infected (prob more than 300-400 infected files but they need the company data someone that no longer works for them was using it to surf for they later found out) . i use the ultimate boot disc to work in a non windows enviornment. i use avira on that one. ran full scan avira found 74 items. used superantispyware found some more. restarted and nis2010 found stuff that both missed EVEN running off the boot disc. also avira failed to remove 3 rouge programs that the 2010 nis DID remove... this was surprising since normally avira has the top or one of the very top detection rates in the real av tests out there and also shows that 2010 is even better than 2009 was and that was a very good program. rootkitty found a root kit and believe it or not nis2010 found another one that everything else missed as well. that is VERY impressive

imo if you dont use a virus program you are simply asking for trouble, but your brain is still the best defense overall.
