    Win32 Virut. Quick question~

    Recently, my laptop got clogged up with this virus. It infects all my .exe files including the ones in my external HDD. After running a scan using Avast, I deleted the infected files on my ex. HDD including hidden files that look like~

    sysrecovery.exe etc.

    After that, I realized it would be prudent to just reformat the ex. HDD and start from scratch, but the thing is, I can't reformat it! @_@

    I'm running on Vista and after clicking OK when the confirmation window appears, nothing happens. Weird.

    Anyways, I ran several scans again (using Avast) on the ex. HDD but I didn't detect any viruses. So here's my question, is it safe to transfer .iso or .avi files via my ex. HDD to another laptop without the risk of passing on the virus? I tried scanning those and they came out clean.

    I would try running a scan with another virus scanner just to be sure, because it is possible for another scanner to find something that avast won't. Give Housecall from TrendMicro a try, it's an online scanner. Also, have you gone into safe mode to try to reformat your external? Hope this helps.

    Safe mode? Hmm. That might work. :O

    The thing is, I'm worried that I might not be able to login once I restart my computer since the last time I had win32 Virut on my PC, it blocks me from entering, forcing me to reformat. I haven't logged out for the past 1 week +. >.< (Downloading something, planning to reformat once that is done though.)

    Also, this virus blocks out all anti-virus related sites like Avast.com, Kaspersky etc. It's infuriating. It even blocks out TrendMicro. Oh, btw, I got MalwareBytes and after a full system scan, detected 2 infected files (not win32 Virut though).

    After some reading, that virus infects every .exe (like you said) and .scr files on any hard drive connected to the laptop. So it seems like your best bet is to try to backup any important files that aren't .exe and .scr, then reformat (both hard drives, if the external appears, which, I think, it should) and reinstall Windows.
