I recently got a new laptop (Dell XPS 1330) with Vista. I had some problems with the Trend Micro that came with it, so I switched to CA. Now I'm also having some problems with CA, though not as bad as with Trend. Does anyone have a recommendation for which anti-virus software works best with Vista?? One person told me he had heard McAfee works well with Vista, but I wanted some additional opinions. I don't mind if I have to pay for the software, I just want something that works well.

    Thanks!

I have tried virtually all the big names...

    Norton (twice)
    Macafee
    TrendMicro
    AVG

...and more that I have forgotten (or blocked from memory).

I had heard the advertisements on Leo Laporte for NOD32 and resisted it, but when I purchased some new computers this Spring and Summer, I decided to try it. I uninstalled the dreaded Norton bloatware that seems to come with every new system.

I installed NOD32 under their trial period (I ended up with 60 days free, instead of the stated 30 days), and decided to buy.

I have since installed it on all my machines, except for my "work" computer, on which I have kept the free version of AVG. The difference between AVG and NOD32 when it comes to system resources is incredible.

NOD32 is very low on system resources, and works quietly, yet effectively, in the background.

    I highly recommend it.

I read part of the spyware guide and it's a little dated in it's recommendations. In fact, few of them are even mentioned in the best freeware sticky.

Give Norton Internet Security 2008 or 2009 a try.

2009 was just released and has been getting rave reviews.

A constant, and long-time, complaint that I have had and experienced with Norton has been the high usage of system resources. This feature-rich program (some features useful, others not) was always a resource hog.

Have they fixed that? I just purchased a few laptops and removed Norton/Symantec from them and, based on what I saw, the programs are just as involved and "heavy" as before.

    Hopefully, I am wrong.

I think you just have to read the reviews for NIS 2008 and more recently NIS 2009.. you can find it here in one of the threads in this forum... sorry I cant figure out where it is right now... *but*, you could always use the "search" tool here on NBR... :) Its an awesome thing we have here, that helps us find what we want :)

And to give you a quick reply, yes, I use NIS 2008 and soon I will move on to NIS 2009, and NO, its not hogging any resources or affecting my system performance or anything :) :) Its great and right up there at the top.. :) :)

I'm well aware how to use the search function, and do so regularly. My question was more of a general nature, and quite frankly, based on what I saw of NIS 2008 which was installed on 3 laptops I just purchased, and couldn't uninstall quickly enough, it is still bloatware.
