    Which Combo?

    I need to purchase an anti-virus/firewall license for my new laptop. Should I go with Kaspersky Internet Security, Kaspersky AV + Vista Firewall, Eset SmartSecurity, or Eset Nod32 AV + Vista Firewall?

    A hardware firewall is not an option for me and I heard that software firewalls don't really do much. Price is of consideration so I'd like to stick with the basic Vista firewall if it works.

    I've used Kaspersky Internet Security up until now and haven't run into issues but it does seem to be the priciest option. I've heard good things about Nod32 but it seems like Kaspersky is still a little better than Nod32 according to reviews.

    I'd appreciate if someone could give me the "low-down" on what to choose.

    either one is good. nod 32 and kaspersky will destroy anything that tries to invade ur laptop. however, i can't say the same for the firewall. it does the job but you will want to have something better.

    I am new to these forums so it might have an impact on your decision ;) but i know my stuff really well. I would highly advise Kaspersky Internet Security as your Antivirus and Firewall.

    I differ from Alliance's View ... I would go for Nod32 AV + Comodo Firewall Pro 3.0 (With HIPS) or Kaspersky AV + Comodo Firewall Pro 3.0 (With HIPS)

    NOD is apparently having serious problems with their updates of late. I used them for years and was very happy but decided to use free apps once my subsription ran out. If you want to save yourself some money, I suggest Comodo Firewall Pro and either Avira or Avast as your AV, along with SuperAntiSpyware.

    You can check the latest independent antivirus test results, from AV-Comparatives, on Kaspersky and NOD32 here; link.
    You can see that Avira outscores both in the latest tests, so why not take Hiker's advice and give Avira's free version a test drive.
    If you don't like it you can still buy one of the other two and combine it with Vista's or Comodo's firewall.

    The combo that I'll be using will be Avira AntiVir and Outpost Firewall. They both seem to be the best if we look at the test results. I would recommend these to you too.

    Hiker, on my XP machine, I use NOD and Comodo, and haven't had any problems.. I wasn't even aware that anyone was having problems with updates to NOD.

    I also recommend NOD32 and Comodo. With those two configured correctly it's gonna be damn hard for anything to infiltrate your machine.
