    Hi all

There's so many threads about re different AV software and whenever you google it, a different comes up as supposedly being "top rated". I don't mind paying if its worth it but I want something that is v good on the virus and also anti-spyware, don't mind if these are diff programs.

    Thanks for your help

    Chris

Norton Antivirus 2009 is very, very good. (and the gaming edition is even faster and uses less resources!
Avast also worked very well on my computer.
And Avira has a great reputation as well.

The thing is, antivirus software changes every year, and that's why it is so hard to say which is the "best" antivirus. For example, just a couple of years ago, Norton was probably the worst software out there. Since 2007, it has made tremendous improvements.
AVG on the other hand, was very good a couple of years ago, but seems to go down, IMHO. Same thing with Kaspersky.

On top of that, some computers simply respond differently to different kinds of antiviruses. NOD32 really bogged my system down, although it is considered to be very light-weight.

I think your best bet is to experiment with

I've been using AVG for three years for now. Never had a single infection. So, freeware AVs can do their job. I wouldn't recommend anything particular, it's a matter of taste, I guess. My recommendation is to keep AV databases up to date and have some sense when surfing Internet.

Norton before 2009 was the worst thing you could put onto your computer (together with McAffee) - the 2009 Edition had some positive responses here on NBR...

No, I've run well with CA before, but it runs too many tasks, and is supposed to be bad.

I have since upgraded to Kaspersky - It doesn't slow your computer down after you do the full scan.

PS: I never had a virus, neither with outdated etrust or up to date CA or Kaspersky :)

I have following anti virus software:-
    Anti virus : Kaspersky AV
    Firewall : Windows Firewall
Spyware : Windows defender, A-squared malware(most of the time).
    Prevention: Spyware blaster
I use on demand scanners superantispyware and Malware bytes anti malware once in a week.

My Kasperskly AV is going to expire in a week. I am looking for free AV software. Also suggest me if there are other areas i can improve.

Nope, just uninstall it like you would any other program. Make sure you click the "complete uninstall" button during the uninstall process.

To be honest, I also thought my computer was a totally virus free machine. And it probably was until the "flash stick" autorun thing.

Avira will rid you of this pest if it's up to date and you choose "delete" instead of Avira's "deny access" option. It will take time and many "delete's" later. But eventually, you will kill the pest.

And you will not loose anything in the process. Just the "virus".

    Cheers,
    Theo
