    Hey guys,

I have 11 days of subscription remaining on NIS 2009, and based on this forum on Symantec, the admin from Norton says that the release date is September 2009. My question is "when exactly" in this month? I'm running out of days and I need the new version soon.

My other question (which will probably solve the first one) is if anyone knows whether NIS 2010 will work the same way as NIS 2009 in terms of upgrading from previous versions? Last year I was able to smoothly update from 2008 to 2009 with an NIS 2008 license. They still have NIS 2009 in shelves and I'm wondering whether I can take the 2009 serial/license and use it for NIS 2010 downloaded off the Symantec site...

Why don't you try out ESET Smart Security? It's built on NOD32 which people say is the best anti virus software out there. You get a month of usage free before you consider purchasing it.

Your subscription should work just fine with the newer product. I've had the same license since NIS 2006.

Thanks Deathwinger and Maximus for suggesting ESET. I am quite familiar with its great performance and light footprint and have actually considered purchasing it if NIS 2010 wouldn't be at par with NIS 2009. However, I was quite satisfied with how NIS 2009 worked for me and am also quite pleased with the generally positive reviews that NIS 2010 has garnered throughout its beta stage.

I also factor into account the price of the software as I will purchase the 3 or 5-user version, and as of now, ESET Smart Security v.4 on Amazon still costs $89.99 while the quoted retail price of NIS 2010 is only about $67.00-$71.40 on European Amazon sites. Anyways, ESET is still definitely on my top list of AV softwares and I'd probably give it a try in the future, but for now, I think I'll stick with Symantec.

Thanks for the insight Matt. I also have used an NIS 2008 license for 2009.

Just get on Symantec Live Chat, and tell them you hold a valid license and ask for an upgrade, and be nice ;) :) You'll get the upgrade. As for the upgrade process itself, I guess it should be smooth because as mentioned before, for me too, going from 2008 to 2009 was quick and neat. And I don't think why they would change on that.

I've found some potential release dates guys...

It seems that NIS 2010 will be released at different dates for different countries.

On the Amazon UK website, it says the release date is on October 2, 2009.

According to the Symantec Forums, Switzerland's getting it on October 5, 2009.

Lastly, Amazon Germany says their release date is on September 14, 2009.

So it really varies from country to country, but expect the release to be between mid-September to early October.

Thanks fonduekid. That's actually exactly what I did when upgrading from 2008-2009 and Symantec staff were very kind and accomodating and took me through the whole process. I was just wondering if Symantec changed anything for NIS 2010, which so far seems like they didn't. I'm running out of days and I think I'll purchase a 3-user license for 2009 again (especially that it's on discount now), and upgrade to 2010 once it comes out.

While I agree that ESET is a very good antivirus utility, it does NOT use fewer resources than Norton Internet Security 2009. It actually uses more resources while delivering slightly fewer features.

ESET Smart Security uses 57MB of memory while Norton Internet Security 2009 uses 52MB of memory. ESET also does not include parental controls, Instant Message scanning, or Identity Protection, all of which are in Norton Internet Security. (Source: Maximum PC magazine, January 2009)

Well come to the forum TNO821, and +reputation for you.
Yep! The system slowdown a little is not because of resources usage of NIS 2009, it is due to the features such as Scanning and Protection stuffs. While ESET NOD32 used higher resources but it have little features compared NIS 2009, so, the system didn't slowdown harshly.
System with 0 Antivirus and Windows Defender and Security tools is the FASTEST system. LOL. But it is very dangerous! XD!

Norton Internet Security is by far the worst anti-virus program.
When I used it, the program didn't prevent viruses from intruding your system... it made viruses! If you want to keep your computer clean from viruses and safe at the same time you should definitely try out NOD32 as Deathwinger said.

see here its out NOW... on symantec updates site.. http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=416259

vinyard for me actuall nis2009 picked up a lot of stuff eset smart security totally overlooked and it uses even less memory than ess and has a MUCH better built in firewall. also if you go to wilders forums you will see the NUMEROUS issues everyone seems to have with ess since version 3 that are still not even fixed totally yet
