Nod32 does a good job for me for the last few years. Also theres a version with a firewall too in case you need some extra security.

Symantec's new Norton AntiVirus Gaming Edition, if you don't mind spending money.
Maybe you're hesitant to use it so first download a free 15 day trial before purchasing it.
It has excellent detection rates, it's very low on resources and is even less intrusive than normal NAV during gaming. Download link.
The new NAV and Norton internet security suite have more advanced technology than Norton 360.
    Cheers.

If you want free AV then Avira, hands down!
But, like Baserk said, if you dont mind paying, try the new Norton Gaming Edition. Its amazingly low on resources; so much that it doesn't feel like your running an AV! I'm testing it out rite now, and i have to say its really impressive. Plus, its got really good detection rates in the latest tests - on par with Avira.
    Cheers!

I use Avira and for me, and it has no impact on gaming or benchmarks.
The paid version is only 27 dollars a year too.

I don't see norton 2009 dragging down performance for me at all, and it catches EVERYTHING. I've never used AVG but have trouble trusting free AV, and kaspersky sucks.

Free AV is the worst way to go. Unless you are disciplined in doing the checks yourself and have no trouble seeing pop ups to buy the full version come up, your going to get viruses as well as annoyed.

I have used Avira for ages and thinks its great also. Has stopped viruses and kept my pc clean. Had norton years ago and just annoyed me all the time hogging the system and stopping things from working.

Also for those that don't like the popups, go to the avira folder and right-click on avnotify. Then go to properties, security tab, system option and then click on deny for 'read and execute'. Then no more ad popups when it updates.

Yeah, 1 vote for Avira. It's light, fast and runs in quiet.

I vote Kaspersky Internet Security. It's simply fantastic. The only problem is wrapping your head around the idea of trying to tell it that a specific game EXE file is ok, and is not really a keylogger. Once you teach it though, it works great.

I've heard many good things about Norton AntiVirus Gaming Edition. Seems to do just what it's supposed to do. My only gripe - it's not free :p

I recommend either that, or Avira Antivir.

Most of them, like Avira Antivir, use almost no resources and just sit in the background. You should notice no change in performance with Avira on or off when you game (unless, of course, you're running a scan).

No, and since it's an on-demand scanner (unless you pay for real-time protection), it will only run when you tell it to :D
