I got a laptop in September before whens school and didn't have any anti-virus spy and malware protection. So i'm asking the experts on what i should i use. I just installed avast and detected one trojan and it still scanning. My college offers a free symanetc for its students. Should i just use what my school has or get something else. I'm using vista firewall is their anything better? Or other anti virus spyware malware u recommend?

Avira. there's a free version, and with a little tweaking, it's a beauty to use.

I've never tried Trend Micro but I have friends that love it over Norton.

OP: Go with Avira, Super Anti Spyware, and Comodo. Those are the three major programs. AVG has had nothing but problems since version 8. Just look on the front page for some of the more recent events.

Buy Norton Internet Security 2009. It's simply the best.

If you can get NIS2009, the full security suite, for free from your uni, it would be an excellent package.
If not, the programs recommended by jin07, Comodo firewall and SAS, are very good.
Avira has better detection rates than Avast but it lacks the antispyware function of Avast (and Avast has GMER antirootkit technology so use the bootscan after letting it scan for viri/trojans etc).
    Cheers.

for free nis2009 is AWESOME. nothing else free compares imo. i prefer kaspersky kis2009 myself. stay far away from trend imo

avira is great but does have more false positives i dont recc it so much for those who may not be sure what they are removing when it tells you to.

i have switched my mom over to kaspersky and even she can use it and i feel comfortable knowing she is protected with it. i do computer repair and building and i recc kas to my customers.

I'm not such a big fan of Kasperky. It causes BSOD's, lockups, scans take up lot's of memory, scan's don't complete, and it deletes Lenovo software.

But, if Kaspersky works on your computer, get it. I like Norton though.
