Im currently using AVG, and its works pretty decently for me so far. Plus its free, and probably the best free anti-virus ive seen so far, unless someone proves me wrong, then I'll go out and download theirs :D

I also use Trend Micro '05 and it's worked well for me, but I just read an article yesterday (PC World, I think) and saw that it isn't rated as highly as last year.

ESET's NOD32 is the best. Tried it once and now I've used it for few years. Recommending it to everyone - very configurable, virus definitions are up-to-date, it includes even internet security for spyware and torjans etc. Ever since I've used NOD32, I've had 0 viruses in my PC. (Y)
PS. Never ever use Norton Antivirus.

Check out this thread (tables and charts). The other text is in Estonian - sorry for that :p

I had set up a very simple test of NAV vs NOD once. I installed NOD32 and downloaded a Trojan which I knew Norton would catch. NOD32 didn't catch it. So much for "best".

AVG Free Edition, Zone Alarm Firewall which is free and Lavasoft Ad-Aware personal for spy-ware and ad-ware. It's all free and these three programs make an EXCELLENT anti-virus protection when used togeather. You guys should try it!

What would have happened if the Trojan had been an unknown? Look at the NOD record for viral activity in the wild. Not one company has been able to match their record! Check it out, then decide... www.nod23.com

I'd say whoever updates their virus database and program the most often is the best.

Avast Pro for me baby. I get updates all the time. I turn on my laptop or desktop and a couple minutes later, POOF, some dude comes on and says, "Virus database has been updated." Sometimes there are more than one update a day, and program updates are pretty frequent as well.

Uses very little system resources, user friendly interface, that's also attractive.

    I love it.

I used to swear by Norton, but they're targetted by hackers and also uses up too much system resources.

    Cheers,
    Mike

I keep AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic on my keydrive and use it when troubleshooting systems, much more thorough than other portable solutions e.g. Stinger. I also kept it on my home computer before I got Cable internet which comes with McAfee. So, I use McAfee now because it's free with my internet.

I found it through another way :) ... but thanks...

Is it free? It seems one has a choice of a trial version and a commercial version... Does the trial terminate after a while?

I can't seem to find the info on the site....

Yup, I guess I'll go back to it, once my bitdefender trial expires. I just wish trend micro (pc-cillin) had an anti-virus only software, not a whole suite, becuase I prefer zone alarm (the free version) over any other pay firewall

    http://anti-virus-software-review.toptenreviews.com/

2006 Review of common AVs. NOD32 was not ranked top just because of its lack of ease of use, otherwise it is just as effective as the top ones.

I usually don't trust software reviews in general, but just read them to get a general idea.

Same here, I like Antivir Personal Edition and it is currently what I use on all of my machines, except the old PII, which get the AVG treatment.

I have tried Norton Corporate Edition, Kasperksy, and Avast! before and the only one I really disliked was Norton, go figure.

Yeah, I had Norton too that came preinstalled on my laptop, what a pile of crap! It didnt slow my laptop down too much but Installed norton 2005 on my older home comp, an AMD Duron O/C'd to 1Ghz it became painfully slow to boot up. Fortunatley I had no problems uninstalling it. But I needed to uninstall some symantec software for the updates and then delete some folders and registry entries.

After some mentioned how light NOD32 is, I gave it a shot. WOW ... that is light.

I used to consider anything bordering 40-50MB usage good enough, but NOD32 destroys that by a long shot! Pretty good. And I like that it is only an AV, no Firewall, Spamprotection or any of that.

I switched from Norton to NOD32 because of the performance issues and I don't regret it. The only way I can tell it's working is by the fact that my computer hasn't slowed down.

On my ThinkPad, F-Prot is eating only 2252K (~2MB) of memory. I doubt anything
beats that. I've used NOD32 in past, as well as over a dozen others, but its
only F-Prot that I keep going back to.

    Give it a try.

So i always use AVG and am satisfied except I never really knowwhat it does. I'll run a scan, it'll find a fill, i right click it, check out its details, then my options are delete the file, or quarentine it. So i always move it into the vault, sometimes delete, but I never get that reassurance that makes me feel like my pc is clean. If I delete the main file, can' the virus still be active? And if I quarentine it, then Its still on my HD. Thats not very reassuring... but my system works... so it must be... I just wish AVG could say "AVG has found a virus, AVG has sliced and diced it and made sure it never sees the day of light again" :D

AVG for me. Used Norton for YEARS, never had a problem or a virus. Got AVG...same story. So the free software works jsut as good as the really expensive stuff? Free gets my vote.

It also helps being connected and behind and incredibly secure network, but that's a different topic. If I was not on my network and just floating round on the internet, I might look into something a bit mor secure than AVG. But for my uses it's perfect.

pc cillin is trash. PCmag and pcworld recently had comparisons where avg (my favorite freebie) came in at tenth out of ten. I have had machines get viruses that used avg. I personally have used norton from 2002-2005 and this year I switched to mcafee which I find is much better than norton (and according to pcmag and pcworld one of the best antivirus solutions.) I am using the security suite. Along with spybot and ad aware.

Always used Norton, came with the computers and I like using Ghost to create backups of setup images. But its getting really annoying. So my vote is not for Norton.

Now I'm trying to decide between AVG and Avast!, free versions.

One question for Avast! users, the free version does not have a script blocker. What do you use?
