Clean installing now, so I need to sort out my system's security soon.
Are those 3 enough to protect my system?
Which is better, Avast or Avira?

Get Comodo and a couple anti-spyware programs. I suggest Super Anti Spyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. Remember to turn off either Avira's of Avast's active protection. You shouldn't have both turned on at the same time.

Yep... but just a note, I had some issue with MBAM recently (it kept getting stuck during scanning, I reinstalled, still the same, and I was not the only one.. there were others too who had similar issues).. So I took it out and juist have SAS and its good enough.. you can try it though.. just to keep you informed :)

Really? I haven't seen any threads on it. Why not start one to see if we can solve your problem? I've never had any problems myself.

Sorry if I wasn't clear - I'm not gonna use Avast AND Avira - just one, I simply haven't decided yet.
I think I'll stick with Avast!, as I'm used to it.

I recommend sticking what you are used to. When it comes down to the Avast vs Avira and a couple others such as NOD32 many users post what they use and what they believe is the best. Therefore it is their opinion, many do not properly weigh the benefits and the shortfalls of each.

With Avast, you'll have a real decent AV program. Not the best but very decent.
Like already mentioned; if you like it, keep using it.
I like it myself because of it's many configuration options.
Vista firewall wouldn't be my favourite, I'd choose Comodo because it has got a HIPS.
But that's personal preference and Vista's firewall isn't as bad as some people seem to think. It ain't Swiss cheese.
The only thing I'd advice to use extra, is ThreatFire; a behavioural blocker that will give you real-time malware protection.
It uses 8 mb, updates regularly, is easy to use and not much in your face. Mind you, it's 32-bit only.
As an extra on-demand anti-malware program, use either SAS/SUPERAntispyware or MBAM/Malwarebytes'AntiMalware for a regular/weekly scan.
Check my sig for download links.
    Cheers.

I'll go with SAS, might look at that ThreatFire too.
Will running any of these create conflicts between programmes?

    Thanks

I've never had any conflicts with Avast & Threatfire & SAS, nor read about them anywhere.

Check http://www.virusbtn.com/Session-607d8fbf592289c94e9a963f91db51db/news/2008/09_02 for differences in detection between Avast and Antivir. They are both excellent and you might want to try both to see what has the least system impact and conflicts.

Comodo Firewall has a classical behavior blocker which can be quite annoying as it prompts for action a lot. Threatfire is a better option in this respect as it flags only actions it considers suspicious.

I was thinking about running Comodo, Avira, and SAS.. and holes or conflicts with this?

Brings me down to a AV with rootkit from Avira.. Firewall from Comodo.. with realtime malware, and SAS as a backup scanner.

Anyone see any problems here or any upgrades?

So I went with the setup I just posted and seems to be working well.
Comodo defender is kinda intrusive, but I'll let it run for a few days to break it in and see how it is. Still looking for any suggestions on if that combo is good enough, i.e. does it have any holes?

Only real problem I have is that when I uninstalled avast it's still showing in Windows Security Alerts in the Malware section as running.

So it's showing avast which I have uninstalled and SuperAntiSpyware. Is there a way to remove this? I have a sneaking suspicion that it's just an erroneous registry entry since I can't find the software at all, but I've already run CC Cleaner on the registry.
