Today i started, to get this pop called security saying "The application cannot be excuted the file "different each time" exe is infected do you want to activate your anti virus software now" Every time i try to open a folder a windows media player VLC player. I went into safe mode and run Avira and it seemed to freeze, so i went to normal start up and ran Avira found 6 viruses and repaired them all and restarted my laptop and the virus is still there. The virus tries to connect to the internet I.E opens trying to do a scan.

Time to cut the loss and re-install the system anew.

You can try first to take a look at background and startup processes and see if you can remove some dodgy apps that you don't recognize first. But a clean install is probably your best bet at the moment.

    cheers ...

That is a like shooting a hamster with a bazooka.

There are lots of websites that will walk you through holding your hand all the way through a virus removal.

    try

Not so much shooting a hamster with a bazooka, but more like clearing out a large infected area where the hamster can run and hide ;)

Sometimes (rarely) one is lucky in Virus removal, most of the times it is a frustrating exercise and a waste of time trying to clean out Virus - one always has this funny feeling back in one's head *did I really remove them all?* type of feeling.

    cheers ...

There are dozens of threads on this very topic of antivirus for Windows. Rather than rehash it again, take a look in one of those.

And qhn, you're just plain wrong. You sound like a geek squad tech at best buy where the answer is always to reformat and reinstall.

In 20 years of professional computer maintenance I have only had to reinstall Windows once due to a virus, and that was a result of the damage the virus caused, not the removal of the virus.

Good to hear. You might want to dig around the section for some good inputs.

I personally use MSE (and Windows Firewall) exclusively at the moment on all my comps with great satisfaction. Coupling with some browsers add-on like WOT or McAfee Security Check, I am quite satisfied with the protection from malicious attacks so far.

Not "always", but when the system is being compromised and experiencing adverse effects like in OP's description, then yep - I would call for the full zapping (again) :p

Very nice to know that you belong to the few lucky ones.

And gerryf19, just because it works for you, it does not qualify you to tell others if she/he is being wrong.

If one makes an input here in the forum and it works, great. Others can learn from it.

If one makes a call in the forum that does not work, it is also great, since one can now learn about why it does not work.

    cheers ...
