There are many other security tools apart from Bitdefender which are light on computer resources such as:

    Immunet Plus
    Kaspersky
    Avira
    Panda Cloud Antivirus
    AVG Internet Security
    MSE/Windows Defender
    ESET NOD32

Bitdefender free is indeed one of the lightest av's I have used.
Unfortunately I removed it because of a conflict with my navigation software.
Currently I use Qihoo 360 Internet Security that is only an av.
I find that also light, but Bitdefender Free was the lightest on my system.
