I have a virus on my computer that will not allow me to manuever at all. As soon as I turn my laptop on, a box pops up asking me if I would like to purchase something. I say no and it doesn't go away. PLEASE HELP!!!!

I don't know what to do!! I need my laptop because I will be starting school online again in a few months.

My computer is quite old and it's an OAIS. My exhusband gave it to me a while back and it had been working until a few months ago.

Thank you to anyone who could help me with this.

try booting in safe mode and run the antivirus

then download ccleaner.. and clear the registry

if that doesn't work, boot in safe mode again and do a system restore to the day before you got the virus

if that doesn't work... then unfortunately you will have to reformat (clear the hd and reinstall everything)

1st get a copy of some antivirus software (trial maybe)? I would recommend kaspersky but get whateer you like i guess. When you boot up make sure you are not connected to the internet. Disconnect the network cable or disable wireless in the bios or do whatever you need to do. When it ask you to buy whatever click yes. It will try to go to the internet but will fail of course. Hopefully this will allow you to install kaspersky and then do a scan. Hopefully this virus isn't a brand new one otherwise your not going to have definitions to fix the problem but kaspersky still might block it with its proactive defense.

These are some general things you could try. Its hard to give you specific information because we can not see exactly where you are at when you hit this problem. I mean are you at your login screen for windows or is it after that?

If you have an external 2.5 enclosure you could also throw the notebook hard drive into that enclosure than do a virus scan on it with another machine. You really need to opt up and buy antivirus software. You should never ever run without it.

Download Avast and Windows Defender - they are both free. Run them both, restart your computer if you have to, etc.
Definitely do not connect the harddrive to another pc, as you may infect it too.

I think this doesn't infect anything:
Try the ubuntu live cd and install the anti virus software for the ubuntu. Run and reboot. Those installed files wouldn't stay since it would be resetted...

Of course, if you get it working fine again, you should download and install AVG Free.
