    Hi,

I have avast on my wifes notebook for protection, I find its a huge resource hog. AVG is not so much, however AVG does not protect very good. Any other free protection suites that are fast and free? for my computers I run kaspersky, and its awsome. However, I only have one load left on my copy and I want to use that for my sons computer because of the great parental control. I may bite the bullet and buy another copy of kaspersky. But if there is a free suite that is good, im open to suggestions.

avast is not that big a memory hog. try mcafee, norton or pcillin and you'll appreciate it's footprint in your ram. no it's not the smallest memory hog but it's far from norton. also, you can adjust settings on avast. for best performance and reduce resource, disable generate vrdb. u can also disable a couple of real time scans, if you don't use that type of program.

^ I concur on Avast not being a memory hog.
I'd choose Avira AntiVir for replacement.
While it doesn't offer many configuration options like Avast and it also lacks antispyware protection, it runs a bit lighter and offers excellent AV protection.
Every update there will be a popup screen though, that's the only Avira disadvantage.
Keep in mind that Avast builds the VRDB once you install it, that can take a while and uses some resources but when that's done, it should run quite light.
    Cheers.

baserk and kojack and anybody else, the settings allow avast to build db's when comp is idle or in screensaver mode, thus taking up memory and cpu cycles. this will take up ram as you're allowing you're comp to have it on standby. you can rebuild a db one day when you know you're not going to use your 'puter for awhile/overnight. i didn't think avast was going to cut it when i first tried it long ago, but i figured out why my comp was hiccuping here and there and disabling the vrdb and turning down or off some of the protection that was unnecessary made avast a clear winner for my av solution.

    Yep, I know.
I just meant it as a warning; when folks use Avast for the first time and the VRDB builds up, a lot of people think this is how Avast always will be.
Good to mention the configuration options indeed. :)
    Cheers.

I have used AVG, Avast, Avira and Norton.

I found Avast to be light on resources and a great AV. Then I tried Avira.

IMHO, I have found Avira to be the best of the four and plan on sticking with it.

Ive used avast ever since getting my computer, no virus's at all, and also, no system lag due to anti-virus. Why? Because when gaming you can DISABLE IT, and when you SURF you can have it on.

Edit: I spent the extra money on a notebook cooler instead.
