Recently I upgraded in Antivir 10 and ever since then the guard part of the program shuts down and starts up sporadically every couple of minutes. This wouldn't be so much of a problem if it were only that but my computer seems to slow down dramatically when it happens.

I was wondering if anyone else has this problem or if they know how to fix it. Windows defender is known to conflict with Antivir and I have that disabled and also Teatimer from Search and destroy disabled but the porblem keeps happening.

I was also wondering if some programs that shipped with this Thinkpad T61p might be the problem.

This is a fresh install of Avira with all of its componets completely removed beforehand.

Haven't seen Avira exhibit this behavior (avguard shutting down sporadically) but I have seen it slow computers down recently.

AVGuard shuts down during definition updates but it sounds like this occuring more frequently so we have something uniusual going on.

    What I would do:

    1) Load process monitor from sysinternals and record a log until it happens, then examine the log for odd behaviors,

    2. Uninstall it and find an alternative AV program.

Wow, that program gives me a headache. Probably the best option would be to uninstall it and find something else, but I still like to figure out what's going on if just for curiosity sake.

With anitvir's event log I can get the time where the guard stopped but I don't know what I'm looking for in program monitor and there are 10,000 process for second when the guard closed.

I know, it takes a while to get the hang of it, but it is a remarkable program when it comes to troubleshooting....to paraphrase one of the developers, "When in doubt, run process monitor."

I take it you've posted in the Avira support forum as well? - the moderators on there know their stuff inside out and should be able to sort you out.
