My laptop got hit hard last week. Between Avast and malwarebytes, I am almost back to normal. Unfortunately I cannot start the Windows Firewall/ICS. the file may have been contaminated and deleted. What do I do to recover the firewall functionality?

Open a command prompt window as administrator and type in "sfc /scannow" without the quotes.

This should replace and fix any corrupted system files.

I do not understand; how can that fix missing or corrupt files without the original ones?

Windows has a hidden repository of system files. It is meant to fix your computer just enough to start your computer and recover files. However, it can also be used to repair/restore system files. Furthermore, the scan may ask you to insert your windows DVD if it cannot restore all the files it finds that it needs to.

Thanks for the details. I was being cautious and not trying to make thing worse. I will try it and if needed, as more questions.
Edit: how long does this job run? The initial popup finished and I see no other reports or panels. Svchost is running at 50% and sometimes explorer.exe is on briefly.
