hey guys, a buddy of mine has a toshiba satellite that has been actin up lately. i deleted norton off his laptop and installed AVG and ad-aware, but he never updates the programs. i think thats his problem.

right now he has an annoying pop up and an even more annoying voice that randomly talks. it's like one of those advertisements that say, "congratulations, u have won blah blah blah."

he is using vista sp1 so i'm sure his firewall should be fine. i have scanned with AVG and ad-aware multiple times and we still can't get rid of the annoying voice. could anyone chime in? any insight would be greatly appreciated. =)

I know of the talking ad when viewing web pages, like "Congratulations, you have been chosen to recieve a free X-Box 360". Does this happen when he is offline, online, or viewing web pages?

Try trendmicro.com. They have a free online virus scanning tool that can be quite helpful.

Tell your friend to download MBAM, rename the the installer to m.exe to avoid detection by malware, install it, rename mbam.exe to mb.exe (or whatever name, just not mbam.exe), update the program and then run to clean infections.
Other programs worth using are SUPERAntispyware, Smitfraudfix and DrWebCureIt.
Check my sig for other download links.
    Cheers.

^^^ 100% agreed with those choices i use malwarebytes instead of superanti though myself but both are great
