Perhaps this has been discussed but I just found "Virus Total" a free service for scanning suspect email attachments. Any thoughts or experience with this. I understand that personal or sensitive information should probably not be sent thru this service. What say ye?

Why not get a good virus scanner that can scan email? Avast has that capability, and it's free too.

I know this service and it is good if you have non-sensitive information which you'd like to check on multiple scanners.

Otherwise, I would suggest AVG or Avast.

AFAIK the file you upload at Virus Total helps several antivirus companies to make their products better (they're using the information).

The advantage of this service is that it appears to scan using about 30 different programs for that scan (per the report that is generated when I tested the service) versus just a single program. I would think this increases the probability of virus detection over a single resident program on your own computer. I agree it won't do every email coming in but in my case I don't need that capability, so the occasional very complete scan by Virus Total seems to make sense for my use.

Usually, any email attachments that I get (.zip or .rar, etc), I usually just download them first. And then use http://virusscan.jotti.org/ to scan them. It has about 20 different scanners, including NOD32, AVG and Avast so almost nothing slips through.

Both VirusTotal and VirusScan are good to use if you think you have a false positive with your AV or AntiSpywarre.
