"What is the best free AntiVirus / Firewall / AntiMalware program?"
Many times I have read the same question here on NBR, so about 5 years ago, I've made a list of these programs.
To get the best security programs, sometimes you will have to pay but there are many very good and some excellent programs available for free.

Almost all programs listed are available for XP, Vista and Win7 (not all programs support 64-bit versions).
These are all free programs, not limited trial versions.

It's not necessary to choose one program from every section.
Rather than piling security programs, common sense, backups/images and using a limited/standard user account for daily work are much more important.
Use only what you master and keep the OS and programs updated. And again, backup!

    Anti Virus
    Avast! Free AV 7 ........98,6% - 11 FP
Avira Free 2013 ..........99,8% - 10 FP (includes 3rd party advertising, scores are for Avira 2012)
    MSE 4.0 ....................94,9% - 0 FP (create custom/regular update task)
    Panda Cloud AV 2.0 ....99.6% - 20 FP

The detection %-scores and number of 'False positives' are from the AV-Comparatives Sept 2012 file-detection test link.
(These are not on-execution/behavioural detection scores. Avira scores are achieved with high heuristic settings).
Paid AV and full security suites (and some free version) test results are available at AV-Comparatives ongoing real world/dynamic detection test results link,
Also bi-monthly 'detection, repair & usability' test results at AV-TEST.org link, daily&small sample set zero-day malware test results from MRG Effitas link and free AV real-time test results at WestCoastLabs.com link.

    Firewall + HIPS
    Comodo CIS ............. XP/Vista/7-32&64
    Online Armor ............ XP/Vista/7-32&64
    PrivateFirewall ......... XP-32, Vista/7-32&64

Comodo Firewall Pro and it's HIPS 'Defense+', can be installed without the antivirus in CIS/Comodo Internet Suite.
Make sure to read a user guide before setting up a HIPS (if applicable); CIS pdf, OA, PFW pdf

Are you sure about avg anti-spyware? It's not free and even though it's from avg it doesn't look too good.

Also, you might want to add stuff like "(very recommended)" next to ones like spybot and antivir.

It may be more than you wanted to get into, but a note about using a limited user account is at least a good idea. They are free and can probably do as much, if not more, than all of those programs combined when it comes to prevention.

Like Hiker already mentioned, you forgot about Lavasoft Ad-Aware. They offer a free version of their product.

Also, I thought that avast! offered a free version of their anti-virus?

Very good topic, by the way.
You could also add a section for a list of free registry cleaners (like CCleaner).

Oh so it is. I read through the list and didn't remember avast being there.
Well that's all I can think of, and if people know of a few free registry cleaners you could add a list for it. I agree that right now there isn't much a point so I only really know of CCleaner.

The only thing that I know of that's disabled in the free version is the resident shield. I've been using it since before AVG bought out the other company that had it. I can't recall the name of that company at the moment. It's worked pretty well for me, though. ;)

Actually i've been checking this out and what he says is true. Ad-aware doesn't catch anything but a-squared does. I deleted ad-aware from my system and i've kept a-squared. You should also add a registry section. I have 2 programs for that section that are the best free ones.

I think registry cleaners and what not should go into a different thread. The three things mentioned are the ones which are probably most requested and it would be useful to keep it to just that. If registry cleaners are added, then why not add program x and y and so on? It would keep going until this is basically another Best Free Software for Windows thread.

Glad you've seen the light ;)

As I say watch a-squared for false positives but the good thing is if you spot any then just email them (best with the flagged file(s) attached) and it will be fixed asap..presuming they agree with your opinion! :D

Just to add about Spyware Terminator, I don't doubt it's a decent app with real time protection for free. However it's a real memory hog, I couldn't be doing with it.

I have never liked Ad-Aware from day 1. I always had it installed but never used it. Thought it to be useless to be honest.

    Anyway.

I downloaded Software Doctor from the google pack, but I am running into a problem. I don't want it to continuously scan my system so I turned off the active guard. But when I go to close the software it says that I need to restart my pc to completely close it. I searched through the processes, couldn't find any for SD. Anyone know what this message is about? I like the software but if it's always going to be running even if I close it, then screw it.

I am an avid supporter of A-Squared and Search and Destroy, although I use S/D more as a backup to make sure nothing was missed. I would like to also throw in SD. If this message is just bogus then I will continue to use it.

    Thanks guys.

I see that windows defender made the list, how does it stack up against the rest? I haven't heard great things about it, is it really better than Ad-aware 2007 and Spybot S&D?

    Has anyone tried Comodo BOClean?

I'm looking to replace AdAware since it normally only catches tracking cookies which I can delete with CCleaner.

Just got the 400.00 dollar Sony Laptop Deal at Best Buy for a family member, and I put AntiVir on it.....pretty impressed for being a free program. I seem to prefer it over Avast (maybe), AVG let me get burnt about 6 years ago so I've been jaded on that one :D

I had a family computer that AVG was 'guarding', and it got infected with a helluva virus that corrupted the registry. I had to delete 102 registry entries manually after removing the virus with another program....eventually clean installed...system was never the same.

Worth baring in mind that all leak test results should be taken with a pinch of salt as they rarely represent real world experiences. Very much different to AV.

I happy to continue using Look 'n' Stop even though it scores low in those tests and is a paid product. Why?...because it works well, is the lightest around and is a good accompaniment to the protection of a router.

Online Armor failed the GRC shields up all ports test :( Specifically, the ping reply. I wonder if this has to do with my bit-torrent settings opening up that port.

Do any of you guys use two anti-virus programs and if so do you keep both of their active-protection systems on at once? Right now I'm using Antivir and Avast and am deciding if I only should use Antivir's or Avast's active protection, or both.

I think he's referring to the active protection. I can't really answer anything beyond that. I don't know much about either active protection system, hence is why I asked which is better.
