So, right now, I'm using McAfee Total Protection, but I will switch to free software after my subscription ends. I will probably be using:
    Avira Antivir
    Threatfire
Comodo Pro Firewall with Defense+ off
    SUPERantispyware

    Anything else?

I don't know if you need that much....I just use AVG, run a scan every now and then, keep Windows Firewall on, and use FF + AdBlock Plus...

If you're sure you can deal with the bare minimum, use Comodo with D+ on but windows firewall off, and no TF, and SuperAntispyware should be fine.
How so? Are you talking about the latest version?

Hmm... Is TF as annoying as D+? Cause D+ kept on popping up with messages. Or will that disappear after awhile?

TF is a lot more quiet but D+ will stop popping up after a while of usage. It doesn't take long.

The idea is that after Comodo gets things figured out, it doesn't bother you much.

i had comodo pro firewall. and it always ask me if i should run a programs, install the things.
its worst then uac on vista and if you turn off the security it always "learns" what you're doing

I want to slim down my security. Does Windows Firewall work as well as Comodo? I really am not feeling Comodo, it seems to slow traffic sometimes too much for me. I have D+ off and all of that too.

Same with Threatfire...is it really needed? I have DEP enabled for all programs.

No, it doesn't work as well as Comodo, but it works well enough for me; I'm connected 99.9% of the time through a secure wless router, so I'm not worried, and I trust FF, ABP, and my browsing habits to keep me safe for 0.1% of the time, and I guess Windows Firewall helps as well. :p

If I was doing a lot of downloading/uploading/fancy networking, I'd feel a greater need for a tough firewall.

I am behind a secured wireless router..the ol Buffalo flashed with DD-WRT. I am not using the FW on it. But I hear the Vista Firewall is actually pretty good. Say you are using Utorrent or Yahoo messnger..etc..does it detect and forward those ports pretty easily? I know my router is forwarded..but I notice Comodo slows down yahoo webcam..or downloads..etc..stuff like that.

I STILL miss Kerio Light..that was the best firewall I have ever used.

Yeah, I am using Firefox with AdBlock. It's really good.

I know that the Vista Firewall sucks.

I have read where it can be tricked by certain apps. I think that is what people are bringing up. But Threatfire really never did much for me in 3 months. It stopped 1 malware, which wasn't even actual malware..lol. So that just got uninstalled, and I already see a difference in speed.

Right now I have DEP enabled for everything, Avira, and Comodo. I am wondering if I should just go with Avira plus Vista FW. That is the debate.

I use FF with the plugins mentioned.

Still don't know whether or not to disable D+. It pops up at least 5 times every time I try to install something, asking me for permission. Also, when I run something, it pops up too.

I've gotten the full Kaspersky Internet Protection which comes with AV, anti-spyware, anti-spam, etc. It's the all-around thing if you don't mind spending some money.

I had McAfee for years, then got tired of paying for a system hog and went with Avast Home (free) and really like it so far (I use Spybot S&D too). I use both my router's fw and XP's firewall. I have two other computers in the house that, until about 2 months ago, had the free ATT/Yahoo anti-virus and none of us have had any problems. I think if you have your router set up right, there is plenty of free sw out there that can take care of you.

I did not last with Comodo though - I could not live with it long enough to allow it to get "quiet". And it seemed to slow things down for me.

If you don't like resource hogs, then don't use Avast. Use Avira Antivir.

I'm fine with the learning part of Comodo, but I really don't like the allow and block part of it. It pops up five times each time I try to do something. It's a hell lot worse than UAC, which I already disabled.

Yes, turn it off. When i turned off Windows Firewall my internet connection speed increased. Make sure after you turn it off in program, kill the service via MSConfig.

Omg... I was downloading SP1 for testing on another computer, and the connection shot from 10 KB/S to 200 KB/S after disabling.

So Calvin, is it worth it to search for another firewall once I get my machine. I currently have Kaspersky Internet Protection on my desktop which has a firewall. Should I rely solely on that and turn off the Windows firewall? I've left it on this whole time thinking the more security, the better.

On a side note, why is it that all of the programs that are built in to the OS seem to negatively impact the OS? I mean, I was told to go with Auslogics Disk Defragment because its faster and better than the Windows defragment tool. There are so many other programs that people are choosing to download, like firewalls, because the programs provided with the OS aren't as efficient. That just seems backward to me. That's what the staunch Apple supporters mean when they bring up arguments about the OS. M$ just doesn't seem to care enough to provide solid programs . . . or even a solid enough OS for that matter. I'm sorry guys, I just had to rant a little.

Just use Kaspersky and turn off the windows one. If you want, it's kind of personal preference if you don't take into account the speed improvements.

Oh, believe me when I say I definitely want the speed improvements. I just didn't know that something built in to the system would compromise the speed that much, and I also thought that I'd be protecting myself more with both. I don't mind turning off the Windows firewall since I trust Kaspersky.
