    Poll needed. XD!

I would suggest Avira Antivir Personal 9! It is the strongest and lightest resources FREE AV currently!

Avast! 4.8 Home Edition = Have more features
Avira Antivir Personal 9 = Ultra high detection rate

I vote Avira as well! The link is correct for the free version, although if you are interested in the paid version or other security software, check out this link: http://www.avira.com/en/pages/index.php

I've tried both and my vote is for Avira due to its higher detection rate and better user interface. I tried to like Avast but I just couldn't get used to its UI.

Avira has great detection, but sometimes annoys you with false positives.

I like avast but its scanner moves at a snails pace. It takes like 2 years for a virus scan to finish. But it has a boot up scanner which is good but is also super slow. :(

I have it on high detection rate.
Rumour said low detection rate would have lower false positive report/detection and high detection rate would have higher false positive report/detection.

For the sake of safe, I choose HIGH.
Lastly and again! Avira Antivir Personal 9 FTW!

Both are equally as good and capable to ward off the nasties. My vote goes to Avast because it blocks websites that it senses could pose a risk to your computer. It's also checks MS Outlook when you start Outlook.

I have used Avira in the past but it has issues with updates. Every computer (total of 4) I have installed Avira, it takes forever (15-30minutes) to connect and download from their server. Many here on NBR claim to have no issues but I guess i'm one of the unlucky few. In fact if you uninstall Avira it will ask you why and to no surprise "updates" is one of the reasons, go figure.

I have no such problems with Avast OTOH. One thing I do like about Avira is the clean and intuitive interface. Anyway you can't go wrong with either one.

I never recommend avira free to anyone simply because avira lacks basic self defense protection. It is too easy to shut down avira services so imagine what a undetected virus can do to it.

I tested the latest version a few weeks back and I was able to shut it down by killing the avira services in memory IMO too easy. Avast on the other hand if you try to do the same thing you will get a nice "access denied" message. Avast will even warn you when you try to uninstall it; it will ask you if you initiated the uninstall request and ask you to confirm it.

Detection rates are nothing if your antivirus cannot protect itself. ;)

Yep, that's why I have Avira Premium and it's great.

But as far as the free versions between these two, after using both, I still give the edge to Avira because it's lower on resources (quite a bit lower IMO) and the UI is way more intuitive and functional, although granted that's just a subjective observation.

But I am optimistic about the upcoming Avast 5. It promises a much lower resource footprint, a much higher detection rate and a much improved UI (based on the few shots I've seen from the pre-beta).

I assume you didn't have the options marked under Expert Mode-General-Security-Protect processes from unwanted termination?
Ticking the option will give you the same nice "Access denied" message if you try to terminate Avira processes in Task Manager.
    Cheers.

Yep! So, Avira isn't dumbed. LOL.
I used Avira too. But 1 weak point is it doesn't scan mail. T.T
    Avast have mail scanning function.

But you still will have the same problem even if you have this turned on. A smart (undetected) piece of malware can disable this and then guess what shut down avira with no problems. With avast the self defense is built in and cannot be turned off with any options ;) . Also IMO this option shouldn't be off by default because a person who knows nothing about it will continue to use avira without knowing it can be shutdown easily.

So as Mr.Moo said it is a FAIL but not the kind of fail you want!

    I can't wait to try avast 5 :D

    LOL!
Some even worst. Said that you're a -star. LOL.
Some were just blank mail. Last time, I remember I open a blank mail, my email has been hacked and the msn started to send weird messages and virus links after that. After changing the password, it is OK already.

If Avast! 5 claims to be more powerful and light resources. Then, I would go for it.
Currently, my Avira Antivir Personal 9 have no problems.

True, it doesn't have dedicated scanners like Avast has for the web or email.
However, Avira will still scan every read and/or write operation, depending on the settings you use, so every downloaded file/email that is written (on to your HDD) will still be scanned.

I'm not aware of any malware that can kill the self protection atm.
Care to expound how malware could achieve this? If you can, I bet Avira is willing to pay you serious money.
I agree though, that this option should be a default setting.

There is new malware being launched everyday so you never know. I have seen viruses etc do some clever things in my time so I wouldn't put it past a piece of malware doing this. Think about it if malware couldn't shutdown an antivirus solution then the big antivirus companies like norton, kaspersky etc wouldn't need to have such good self defense modules built into their products.

But the bottom line is as long as the option is there to disable self protection then there will always be the chance that it could get shut down and as you notice the protection is off by default. What avira need to do is make this self defense built in so that it cannot be turned off or tampered with in anyway without the user knowing. :)

I was recently helping out a friend who likes to go to adult sites. He called me cause both of his computers were taking 10-15 minutes to boot up, his McAfee AV was disabled and it wouldn't enable, he no longer could access the internet even with a direct connect via an ethernet cable. Programs were super slow to launch and it took like 15 minutes to power off. I also found other programs broken or could not be accessed. It was a mess.

I was tempted to install Avira and Avast but did not want the risk of infecting my USB flash drive so I opted to format his computer instead. It fixed the problem after the format and fresh install.

I can't think of anything other than malware or viruses that could cause that kind of damage.

I heard that Avira Antivir Personal 9 have a special feature that it would stop any kind of SPYWARE(no matter new or old or just release) as long as Avira read or sense it is SPYWARE type of programs or files.
I love this feature very much. But it also lead to many false positive.
