I am currently running McAfee Total Protection 2007 on my computer (Specs below in signature), and was wondering if I should switch to free security software, namely Avast!, Comodo Firewall, and Webroot Spy Sweeper.

    A couple questions:
Will there be a huge performance boost if I switch?
Will my computer be more or less secure?

    Thanks in advance,
    Leon

Still undecided, leaning towards free though... And should I keep Spy Sweeper or get a free anti-spyware program?

You must get comodo firewall pro, threatfire, and spybot search&destroy. Disable the vista firewall and disable windows defender. It's not an ordinary person telling you this, it's a software ninja. Free software is better than 99.9% of all paid. That is what i have to say on this matter.

For antivirus, you'll get Antivir. If you really want to get Avast, get it, but it'll slow down your system. If you want to stay with spy sweeper, it's your money being wasted, not mine, so do as you please.

No talk of piracy! But as i said, do whatever you want to do. I just tell you what you need to know, i'm not going to waste hours explaining to you why this is better, or why you should get this. Decide for yourself or you'll never learn. I've told you all you need to know regarding this matter. Any more questions?

Well, sorry but piracy is what i first think whenever someone gets something free which isn't free. If i accuse you, it's not a grudge.

Also, don't take this the wrong way, your not bothering me, i'm just telling you what to do in an easy and explainable manner.

When i tell you to learn for yourself, i mean you should crack open google and search. The more knowledge you learn the better, then you might be bale to show off your knowledge to your friends or whatever you please. Knowledge is power. If you don't want this kind of power, i am always ready to make a page lengths page to explain it to you. So are the other 200+ members. We're here to help, but when i frist came here i was confused by all the different opinions and no one told me to go google it. Now that i have google set as my home page, i'm the one answering questions.

    Any questions?

Just installed AVG Pro (also free from promotional event) and Comodo Firewall.

68 Processes at Boot-up! Down from usual 80-90...

Oh, and should I turn off Defense+ for the Comodo Firewall Pro? It's getting annoying, but if it is necessary, I can handle it...

Turn off defense+ if you like. But otherwise if you're constantly dealing with dangerous stuff, keep it on.

I've been using Avira Antivir for a while and really like it. If you need antivirus software, I recommend it.

I ask questions once in a while that can't be googled. No problem right? Also, i honestly don't care how the hell he got it. As long as he doesn't speak of piracy. I will always say someone is pirating if they say they got it for free. Even if i know the person. My opinion probably will never change so don't bug me about it. I don't need to lighten up, but if you have the time to make a post telling me to. You might wanna take your advise or ask on the forums. :p

You can get McAfee for free from AOL if you want to stay with them. Linky.

As for software, free is works just great also. The only thing I have with free software is all the different processes running in the background. Running Comodo Firewall, AVG (or some other AV) and running a anti-spyware program to scan your computer is a lot to do.

As for what I run, I have NOD32 for my AV and spyware needs along with adaware and spybot with a hardware firewall.
