My University hands this thing out. Is it any good? Or am I better off with something else?

I have had good results with Sophos in the past.
They make a solid client and it is usually reasonably well-performing and not obtrusive at all. Now, its been awhile, but I liked Sophos.

Sophos' strength is in outlined virus patterns and constant updates.
They are among the very best at keeping themselves up-to-date with definitions which defend and debug.

For defense against new viruses, I'd say there is better out there, but this will also likely come with more obtrusive clients.

Note this isn't to say Sophos doesn't protect against new threats... it does very well... but there are better.

One more positive note, since Sophos is only really used in corporate and large-scale environments, disabling or destroying its ability to defend you is less-well documented. (its not invulnerable, but unlike something like Norton which is eaten by every virus first thing)

Overall, I'd try it... free and completely registered and DIFFERENT than what most people are using is good.

I have that software on my exchange box, and I don't really impress with it though. It does the work, bbut there are better products out there.

Personally, I use Avast on my laptop. :D

The personal edition of Avast works just fine as well, but the virus makers are now expecting it. There are disadvantages to popularity.

I find Avast more performance-sapping than I care for and not really as much protection as something like kaspersky.
