Should I even bother having antivirus run at startup?

So, since I have my AVG resident shield turned off (worry not, I scan anything that needs to be scanned that I download), should I even bother to have AVG run when my machine starts up? I'm thinking maybe I could just do that, and maybe even ditch AVG for a lighter antivirus, such as Avira or Clamshell (which doesn't even have a resident shield).

    What do you all think?

Just get yourself AVIRA ANTIVIR PERSONAL 9.
You would find your system would running better, faster and secure.
Research and reports(I deleted the history, I don't know the website already) shown, AVIRA have the highest score currently.

AVG has too much of stuffs. In addition, it is resources hog. Some people even experience new NAG screen from AVG. That's why I suggest Avira to you.

you should always run a av during startup.. no matter which one.. personally the nis2009 startup option only added 1-2seconds timed to my startup and it starts scanning before the os actually starts.

Okay, but why? To check for boot sector malware and the like?
And I don't really want to buy anything, but thanks for the tip about nis2009.

Avira has a slightly higher detection rate and the lowest resource usage of all free AV's. (Although it lacks a dedicated emailscanner like Avast has, every downloaded email will be still scanned though).

Avast offers more configuration options like a dedicated WebShield, MailShield, P2PShield etc, GMER antirootkit technology and a password protection option.
Avast requires you to register every 14 months but that's about the only thing 'bad' about it.

Both offer antivirus, antispyware and antirootkit protection.
