Don't torrent anything you're suspicious of.

Only use torrents that lots of other people have used?

Don't torrent (anything that has a) handy keygen(s).
Because that would probably be illegal and it's not allowed to discuss illegal stuff on NBR .
But let's assume you want to download a copy of Ubuntu safely, using a torrent client; I'd advice uTorrent.
If you want advice about the dark(er) side or legal implications, you've picked the wrong forum, sorry, I could tell you some what's and how's but this post would get deleted fast.
Such are the NBR forum rules ;).
    Cheers.

I've done all of these things and still managed to have massive virus attacks. <.< The virus software is always free though.

EDIT: I know we don't discuss illegal stuff here, that's why I left out the details. xD I'm just asking for a way to avoid viruses while torrenting though.

If you want to download a copy of Ubuntu safely, download it from www.ubuntu.com. Much faster than torrenting it.

Don't download illegal stuff. Legal torrents usually don't have viruses.

Was it a good free anti-virus program (ie Avira or Avast, preferably Avira)?

    1. Get your torrents from a website with a comments/rating system.

    2. Scan your not-so-trusted downloaded torrents with your AV software.
