I installed the free version and it shows the icon in my task bar. Is it providing continuous real time antiviral protection? Or is the icon just sitting there?
    Thx,

Yes, it should be providing active protection if you didn't turn it off.

I don't think that's true. It only updates AVG.

I can't figure out if it is actively providing protection. It did update automatically when I powered up but what if accidentally download a bug? Do I need to manually scan it, or will AVG just recognize it automatically.
    Thanks again,

Well I'm not sure if it only updates, but I do know AVG free has active protection. Perhaps try right clicking the icon and see if it brings up a menu with options like Test Center and Control Center and whatever else it has. Here's a description of AVG Free which states that it has on-access protection through AVG Free's Resident Shield: http://free.grisoft.com/doc/download-free-anti-virus/us/frt/0#details

and here's a review talking about it's real time protection:

Try opening AVG. Then go to the Control Center. Once there you should see something called Resident Shield, Email Scanner, and some other stuff. As long as the real-time protection is on, you're protected.
