The product description on the NIS2009 says
    Blocks spyware
    Stops viruses
    Removes Rootkits
    Detects emerging threats without signatures
    Smart two-way firewall
    Vulnerability and Network Intrusion Protection
    Parental Control
Fake Web site blocking — antiphishing
    Web site authentication
    Eavesdropping protection
    Password encryption
    Safe public connections
    Home network protection
    Stops spam in emails

Is NIS good enough alone for all-around protection? Or should I download other anti-spyware, anti-malware, and firewall programs?

Yes, it's a security suite that includes antivirus, anti-spyware, anti-malware, and firewall. It's a very good choice for a security suite, especially if you can find it for $0.00 after upgrade rebate.

I've been using NIS 2009 and yes, it is good enough alone for all-around protection and offers a bit more than your typical AV program. You don't need any other anti-spyware/malware and firewall programs as NIS suffices. Not to mention there's also an Identify Safe utility in Norton that protects all your user online and offline user accounts.

I also find the Norton web-browser plugin, Norton Safe Web, to be very useful and works flawlessly with NIS2009.

However, if you need Backup/Restore and PC Cleanup/Tuneup utilities (for Disk Defrag, Registry Cleanup, etc.), you should check out Norton 360 as it offers everything NIS has, plus Backup and PC Tuneup.

But if you aren't willing to shell out the extra bucks, you can easily just download CCleaner for reg cleanup and Vista's local defrag utility for PC Tuneup and anything else for Backup.

Yeah, but Norton 360 wasnt as light on your system. I tried it.
And I found the Interface horrible and hard to navigate and find what your looking for. NIS 2009's is much better. And Windows has almost all the same things as 360 did in it.
