I have an external HDD I backup to and store off-site in the event of House Fire, Robbery, Tsunami - whatever. On the HDD, I have a single folder called "Backups" and in that folder I have all my digital media, documents etc.

I want to encrypt the "Backups" folder and all of its contents so if someone stole it - they will only end up with a free HDD and not an embarrassing video of my first failed-attempt at a Keg-stand or random tax information. But I also want the ability to Unlock and access everything should I need to. Trucrypt wants to create Hidden Partitions and all these other things which I'm sure are great for Julian Assange but overkill for what I'm going for. I want proper encryption(AES is a universally accepted standard IIRC) but I don't want to get stuck using a proprietary piece of software which costs money.

    Any Advice?
    Thank You!

I use AxCrypt - set up your password/keyword and it locks the contents. Can still see the files (in explorer view) but without the password you can't do anything to them.
Plus the program is free (open source)
