Everyone always mentions how good Avira is so I tried it on my sons laptop.
    It just sits there.
He usually is connected via Wi-Fi at school or the library, but Avira never updates unless you actually tell it to. I thought it updated automatically like Avast or AVG does. Am I missing a setting somewhere?

Have you tried configuring Avira to perform automatic updates in the options area of the software?

I went thru every single button and menu to try and find an auto update. Can't find it. I have at least 3 buttons in different locations for manual updates.

Start up Avira, Press F8 on a menu screen, hit expert mode, general, then update

I believe default is once a day but I have Avira to update 6 times a day and scan once a week. Under administration, scheduler.

I have Avira on one of my desktops, ver. 8, I believe. Everytime I log onto the internet, within 4 minutes, it automatically starts updating. The new one on my sons laptop ver. 9, doesn't do that. He was on for an hour yesterday working on his homework, I came over to check and it never updated. I had to click on "update now" to get it going.

Sometimes update doesn't work if the computer is turned off during the scheduled time. Restart the computer or schedule multiple updates using the scheduler.

    It's not that hard.
Open up Avira, click Administrator, Scheduler, make sure Daily Update is enabled, right click, edit job, change the interval to a time your sons laptop is always on, or set it to however you like. I also like it to run invisible, so I don't see a notification and it updates quietly in the background.
