The closest we've had to a topic like this is "How paranoid are you?" and that was pretty fun.

I'm curious to see what software/ methods people use to stay safe.

Last virus was 1 or 2 years ago...that was due to a friends flash drive.

Experiment. You don't catch a 'cold' from being cold. The same that you won't catch a virus from not having an antivirus. They have to come from browsing malicious sites.

This is not on my critical machine, but on an acer netbook used for browsing NBR, MSN-mail, School mail, Newegg, Amazon, Facebook, Stack Overflow...and that's really it.

As you can see, none of these sites pose a threat, therefore, it's no different than having a firewall, live heretics detection, and the most locked down anti-virus library possible.

Yes, I realize that. I went without an AV for quite a while. But no firewall? It seems silly. You lose nothing by turning the firewall on. System hardening doesn't have to use resources. I can understand not using an AV but having 0 method of protection seems needless.

Router has built-in firewall if it makes you feel better :p. It was really a proof of concept more than anything. The web isn't the rotten virus harboring chunk of undercooked meat every one makes it out to be.

Heck, I'm surprised I haven't seen more people implement game servers to upload trogens and keyloggers to connecting in-game clients instead of kicking the wall hackers or aim botters.

Yeah MSE and Win7's firewall is really all most people will ever need.

    Here's mine:
    Realtime scanner -- MSE
    Comodo firewall and Defense+ HIPS
Comod sandboxing almost all internet-facing applications
MVPS host file on DDWRT router
    DDWRT firewall
Spybot S&D host file on PC
    UAC Max
    Chrome Beta
EMET 2.1 + All internet facing applications forced to use emet.dll

Not looking to change anything. If anything I'll be taking away Comodo.

I like to try different AV's once a year, but right now:

    Prevx (great)
    Windows Firewall
SAS + Malwarebytes both free for occasional
    Router w/ Firewall

Biggest would be most of the time I'm using Scientific Linux.

Before I left windows on win 7 for my personal rigs I dabbled between MSE and avast + windows defender. Both work well if you do smart computing.

As for work we have an XP/server2003/win 7/linux environment and every last computer is using symantec endpoint (corporate AV). Our system runs stable and clean. :)

As of january I have switched back to linux for my main OS as it serves as a better tool. Just like you my laptop is a VERY important tool for work and home. I rely on my laptops to make my living possible. Without them I cannot do my job and surely wouldnt have a job or would literally have to live at work.

    I have iptables. ;)
