I've always been a paid used of AV's, but since I've had my 6860, all I've done is use free trials trying to find an antivirus I actually like. The one that is the most efficient and effective imho, has been kaspersky.

Yesterday, I was browsing all the latest freeware utilities from download.com and got the wild feather up my rear to go on and download AVG.

Is anything wrong with Free AV's? Which ones are better than the other?

    Thanks!~

Avira free is the best free anti-virus and it rivals most paid anti-virus. Pick it up if you need an anti-virus program. I would ditch AVG as your secondary anti-virus and get Avast.

In terms of ranks: Avira > Avast > AVG

Ok, I'll check it out. I just installed AVG, I guess I'll be taking it off.

I agree with this statement, and would also like to add that Clamwin sucks.
Avira is plenty for most users, but if you have to buy: Bitdefender or NOD32.

You can right-click the device and scan it for viruses.

I personally stick with paid-AVs, specifcally Norton Internet Security (currently 2008, moving to 2009 soon).

I've used AVG, but I was too pleased with it. It just didn't feel the same.

I have a rule of thumb, If you are asking about Free anti-virus programs and which ones to get, it's best you get a paid for anti virus.

I say this because the average computer user does not have the time or patience to run a virus scan on their own every week, same goes for updates. If you are asking about anti virus programs to get which are free, this tends to show that you are not in the know how of searching for it yourself and therefore, will not employ the needs required of free anti virus programs. I've seen it happen time and time again. The anti virus never runs and is never updated and when the computer gets a bad virus that the user notices, the anti virus is already blocked and unable to remove it.

Peace of mind lies with the paid anti virus software, it does all the work for you and it does not cost a lot. Especially if you consider the time and money you could lose with a virus attack.

I recommend Norton Internet Security or Mcafee SecurityCenter. :)

Avira AntiVir Free does automatic updates and can do scheduled system scan.

Nowadays if I buy an AV, I usually buy the Internet Security Package instead. (KIS) If I want just an individual anti virus, then I usually go for the free Avira or Avast.

Actually I'm pretty sure most of the popular free antivirus provide scheduled scanning, I know AVG and Avast do.

Yeah, that's why I don't understand why the average user don't have the patience.. as free AV provides automatic too, so they don't need to waste their time to do it manually.

Agreed, all though I've only tried AVG.

I love NIS 2008 though. It will be hard to get me to change, NIS 2009 being the exception.
