There are a lot of threads about various security apps that are free...fewer about those that we need to pay for....

Currently i have nod32 3 and windows defender. Using Vista.

Looking for anti-malware app and firewall. (one for each...I hate using separate programs for realtime and on-demand scanning).

Price doesn't matter - free is best of course, but i'd rather pay for it than have it be mediocre or have to resort to using multiple programs for the same function...or worse, an adware detector that installs its own ads :p

    Any opinions? :)

    Thanks.

So far, from a quick browse of the first page, it looks like commodo is winning for firewall, and either super antispyware and spyware blaster for malware...

I would definitely recommend Eset Smart Security. It is the best one - check virusbulletin.com. Besides, it includes firewall, antivirus and anti-spam modules.
I have been using it for a long time and I is really great nad super-fast.

Already have NOD32 for antivirus, as I mentioned in my post.
I found ESET's integrated suite a bit lacking however.
I'm more interested in stand-alone software that does each of their respective functions independently.

    Thanks for the suggestions though.

    Any more?

Comodo Firewall Pro is one of the best firewalls available, there is only a free version.
Another one you want to keep in mind is Online Armor, currently only an XP version is available but their Vista version is atm between beta and final.
Comodo and Online Armor both offer an integrated HIPS.
Problem with OA is that the free version doesn't have auto-update (and it lacks a lot of features the paid version has got).
CFP is the most 'demanding' to set up initially, the help files should provide sufficient info though.

Superantispyware is one of the best AS programs available along with A-Squared.
The new kid on the block is Malwarebytes'AntiMalware and seems in the same league. I've not found independent comparisons of those 3 yet though.
Try them out before you make a purchase.
None of their free versions offer realtime protection so I guess those are not an option for you.
Check my sig for links and some reviews.
    Cheers.

    I have a signature alright.
If I check my User control panel, I can see my sig.
    Under options, signature is checked.
It just doesn't always show up under my posts, don't know why.
**** 'm, it's not the only thing that's disappeared recently.
Nothing to cry about, just bothersome.

So how does SUPERantispyware compare vs. Spy Sweeper vs. Spyware Doctor?

    And Comodo vs. ZoneAlarm Pro?

I've not found much need for AntiSpyware per se using a (paid) ZoneAlarm firewall and using Firefox.

The paid ZoneAlarm firewall products include program control, which is not in the free ZoneAlarm firewall, and is very important.

Still, I scan with SuperAntiSpyWare and the MicroSoft Malicious Software Removal Tool now and again. Neither ever finds anything on my system. I also scan periodically with the AntiVirus in ZoneAlarmAntiVirus. It never finds anything either.

You may want to try them out, seperately and serially of course, to make up your own mind.

For further reference, my preferences are documented on my website.

I would recommend Kaspersky Internet Security

It's a package of antivirus, firewall, malware protection and others in one piece, which is very effecient.
I've tried many different AVs, but Kaspersky is the only one that never let me down.

You can download try-out version from their website and use it for a month. I bet you gonna be satisfied enough to buy it. And it isn't expensive.
