I currently use Norton 360 on my desktop and it works fine. It goes out in a few months and was thinking about trying Bitdefender. I need something for my new Sagar laptop. Which ones do you guys like, Bitdefender, Norton, Kaspersky or Webroot. Please help. Or is their one i'm missing. These seem to be the top ones. Thank You so much !

One more thing, Is downloading it online a bad idea ? I' know some companys renew it automatically at the end of the expire date, which is fine but i've read it can be a pain to cancel it if you decide to go else where. Thanks again.

Paid AV's can be a waste of one's money, hence why I don't use them.
I usually go with a free AV - and I don't experience problems of any kind (even on 'shady websites').
Should you consider going the free AV route... you might want to use; Avira, Avast or Microsoft Security Essentials (only pick 1).

As for paid AV's... the ones you mentioned are indeed considered 'top of the line'... but if you are bent on using a paid AV... stick with Norton.
There's really no need to switch to another one seeing how Norton is pretty much on par with others you listed.

if you're going to use antivirus at all, i'd go with microsoft security essentials. i got my first "virus" in 10+ years last week and MSE took care of it without issue.

Paying for A/V is like giving 'gifts' to the mafia for protection - you know they're (both) the ones you need the MOST protection from.

MSE HIGHLY recommended. $$$ for Norton is so 1995...

MSE gets heaps of bad reviews in lab testing but that doesn't always translate to poor protection in real life use.

Personally I'm a big fan of avast, using it in conjunction with a firewall like commodo you'll do well to get infected.

Malwarebytes pro is amazing for malware.

A lot of the reasons why MSE scores bad in lab testing are due to:
Low score in 0 day attacks (to which MANY AV's are susceptible) and having no false positives (whereas many others have them to some degree).

Certain labs apparently decided to treat MSE as a 'failure' solely on 0 day attack problem.

From real life experience, I cannot say I had any issues with MSE in years... nor did many other people after I educated them a bit on surfing habits, putting adblock and forcing HTTPS.

OK, I think i'm going with a free AV ! The consensus seems to be MSE. After days of research & contacting a local PC builder & fixer they seem to like AVG. Any thoughts on that program ? Or is the local guy maybe just trying to get my business when an attack gets through. Last question, is my windows firewall on windows 7 good enough or should i get a free one like comodo....asumming its actutally better or not ? If I go free, do you recomend any other programs to help keep me safe. I do some lite online buying. Amazon, Tiger Direct and games. Thanks

Historically speaking, AVG doesn't really have the best track record in terms of system protection or being resource friendly... however, I hadn't been tracking their latest developments, so I cannot comment on the newest versions.
This is why I suggested that if you'd go the free route, consider using either: Avira, Avast, or Microsoft Security essentials.

Yep IMO avg used to be good but then got a bit bloated and u stopped using it and recommending. Stick with deks recommendations.

Commodo is significantly better than Windows 7. Gives you real time notifications of programs attempting to access the internet and gives you the option to allow our block until you have a rule for all programs. Only need the firewall though not the other stuff you have the option of installing.

If you want to fully protect yourself, and others might disagree but you need something for malware. Malwarebytes pro is not free but well worth the small amount of money. In my experience it stops, or removes 99% of malware I've come across.

Edit - can also use open dns dns servers to further improve security. You might even find them faster than your isps dns servers. Although can cause complications of using vpns and the like.

On the firewall... I use the firewall that came with Windows 7, and I can't say I had any issues.
Still, I keep hearing that people compliment Commodo, so it might be worth a look if you want it.

As for Malwarebytes... I don't think a Pro version is needed.
I use the free version for on-demand scans and find it enough.
Besides, you'd usually only scan the system with MBAM if you thought something might be wrong.
