When I bought my Vaio, I had a 90 day free version of OneCare.
Now it's expired and I need new protections.
I want to uninstall OneCare but I like the tune up and the back up functions.

I want to know if you would recommend to simply turn off the antivirus/spyware and the firewall functions of OneCare and take new protection or to uninstall completely OneCare.

    Thanks.

Unisntall it completely. It's going to be discontinued by MS.

Maybe you could list some of the features you liked about OneCare and we can help you find something else to replace them. ;)

Okay! maybe the tune up section only :D

this is what is does (its a direct transcript)

    remove unnecessary files
    defrags the disk
checks for files needing backup (would be cool to have a backup utility)
checks for needed security updates from microsoft (honestly, I thought windows vista would do that without onecare...so this one may be a gimmick)

So what are the best alternatives for all of that?

One last thing, after research on this site and others I was planning to get :
    antivirus : Avira AntiVir
    anti-adware and anti-spyware : superAntiSpyware
Firewall : Comodo (It's seems this one doesn't come alone on the site anymore but with the entire suite)
    Malware : SpywareBlaster

Good choice ? My biggest criteria is not to have systems hog.

    thanks

For backup, you can also use the backup tool integrated into Windows Vista. Just open control panel and type backup into the search box at the top of the window. From there you'll be able to set up scheduled backups of your files.

If your machine has Windows Vista Business or Ultimate, Vista Backup also allows you to create a disk image of your entire computer's state, right down to the wallpaper you had installed during the image creation. It's called CompletePC Backup, and it's a great way to ensure that you have yet another way to recover easily from a system crash.

Not exactly discontinued, they announced that they will make it free.
