    Hi all,

I've been trying to decide on the best anti-virus and firewall software for my new Clevo M860tu (specs in my sig)... and I don't mind paying for the best. I'm after something that doesn't hog system resources much, like Norton did with its stupid symantec, background-running thingy.

However, in my quest to find out whch program to go with, I read a much hyped review on Norton's 2009 edition of Internet Security. I used to use Norton's Internet Security back in 2004 - 2006, but eventually abandoned it due to my system being slowed down and tied up with whatever strange processes it insisted on running all the time in the background... which often disturbed gaming by closing the game down whenever it wanted to display a warning box. :(

I was wondering if anybody here has any praise for the 2009 edition of Internet Security (or experience with it), as the reviews are stating that it's now shed it's bloatware skin and has now become a more faster, reliable, and satisying program that doesn't eat your resources the wy it used to.

Does it still embed Symantec stuff on your system? And does this hog resources still or is it now less annoying?

Just browse down the thread's here in the security forum, and you will find lots of threads in the first 3 to 5 pages, on how good Norton is now... its been discussed over n over again.

In short, NIS 2009 is great. And infact all Norton products now are very good, good detection rates (on par with the best out there, and in some tests NIS performed 'way better' than other suites), very very light on system resources and so on. Cheers. NIS is awesome.

From my experience with it on an Athlon 3000/512 MB/XPSP3 box.
NIS 2009 usually idles at 6/7 MB usage (max 10 MB) and without any erratic CPU spikes.
During a full virus scan usage goes up to 75 MB max.
NIS 2009 has something called pulse-updates, these are virus-signature updates that are send to NIS users whenever Symantec has new ones.
During these updates memory usage goes up to 50 MB but only shortly; NIS will go idle within seconds.
It's AV part scores very decent at AV-Comparatives, coming in third place after Avira AntiVir and G-Data.
There is still an unresolved issue where NIS2009 crashes and recovers (most of the time) which seems to be related to difficulties with email-scanning/Outlook.

I'd say, it's one of the best suites Symantec has ever made.
Still, download the trial version and use it for 15 days to make sure it lives up to your expectations/needs.
    Cheers.

^ everything + there is the norton insight scan and the norton idle time scan as well... and hence the actual full system scan takes a far shorter time...

For the outlook/email client crash issue, I guess Norton is working on it. But I wouldn't hold this as a reason to say Norton is bad. everything other than this has been great, as Baserk pointed out in a clear n crisp manner.

NIS 09 is the first thing I'm installing on my new laptop.

I've left my Bitdefender for it.

NIS 2009 is a breath of fresh air. Best program out there in my opinion.

And this is from someone who was told repeatedly not to even consider Norton and ended up trying them last only to find it the best product overall.

    hmm.

I might have to give Norton a shot....

    Using NOD IS currently.

When my current trial runs out I will give it a shot, see what it's about.

Do they still have the separate update module that uses up about 102MB of memory and 98% of the CPU? :p

No you can't, if you want the best paid AV go for ESET Smart Security (Stand alone AV/Anti spyware is Nod32 if you want to use another firewall, Comodo Firewall is recommended) or Kaspersky, if not I'd recommend AntiVir's free.

NIS 2008 doesn't affect my system's performance. I love 2008 and can't wait to get my hands on 2009.

imo nod has gone down the tubes as mentioned on MANY testing sites now.. eset is simply not what they used to be.

nis2009 is a great program i still prefer kaspersky 2009 myself though..the only area imo nis still lacks some is their removal of malware. its good but not great yet.

    FYI - Norton Protection Blog

I'm pretty satisfied with NIS 09, with the exception of the occasional "Background processes are running" pop up.

well well well... nis2009 REFUSED to delete a trojan.zlob. it told me it found it 3 times (rescanned 3 times to see if it was really removed) it said it removed it. restarted ... nope still there and refused to delete it.

i uninstalled nis2009 and reinstalled kaspersky is2009 and it found it without even scanning and instantly removed it no restart needed or anything. imo NOT good.. im not sure i can trust nis2009 at this point...

On your recommendation, Zfactor, I've gone with Kaspersky Internet Security and I am VERY happy with it. Very, very light program that never bothers me or freezes me out of games like Norton 2005/2006 used to when it decided to do something. I can't speak for the 2008 or 2009 Norton (as these are supposedly lighter systems) but I'm really liking the colour scheme and user interface of Kaspersky.

I agree about Kas being low on resources because I have been playing WOW for about almost 2 hours and not once did it lag or have any issues and very low on RAM use as well. I think I'm gonna buy it after the 30 day free trial is up.
