Which of the two is better in general (security, detecting infections, does not take up a lot of space, and so on); Norton or Sophos?

If I had to choose between those two, I'd go with Norton. However, I wouldn't use either myself.

I run Norton 360 and it works fine, Sophos on the other hand is a pain.

Norton, but I don't think the price difference between IS 2008/09 and 360 is worth it though

I can only say that NIS 2008 runs remarkably light compared to previous versions so that isn't the issue anymore with Norton.
For the actual security performance, check the latest AV test results from AV-Comparatives; link.
Check both the latest pro-active test and the previous on-demand one from february.
That gives you at least information on the AV part of their suites.
    Cheers.

I can get Sophos Antivirus for free at my school while I already have Norton 360 (mom bought it 6 months ago or so)
