Hey, I downloaded Norton 2009 and it found 2 high risk viruses which Avast didn't find and 2 low risk ones. Very happy with it apart from one thing which its sooo annoying.

Usually it takes about just under a minite for my laptop to boot up and about 30 seconds after that for everything to be working (e.g to start browsing on firefox and to start up msn) but now since installing Norton 2009 its taking normal time to boot up and 4 to 5 minites for everything to be working.

I click the firefox icon and after about 5 minites, it comes up and the same for everything else.
I try to see whats hogging all the CPU and when I try to ctrl alt and esc (windows task manager) THAT takes 5 minites aswell making it useless when it finally comes up as the problem has gone.

Anyone else has this problem? its very annoying.

perhaps you have some automatic scanning thing set up to run at startup

other than that... i say NOD32!

Make sure to remove all possible remnants of Avast (if applicable), run CCleaner (for instance) to clean your registry.
Download Norton Removal Tool, uninstall NIS2009, run NRT, reboot, run NRT again, reboot and then install NIS2009 again.
Also, read this Symantec instructions page.
    Cheers.

Did you remove Avast and then use the removal tool or did you have an older Symantec/Norton product installed previously?

I had Norton on my laptop when I first got it.
I removed avast.. then ran the Norton cleanup tool and then installed Norton 2009.

I have just downloaded and ran ccleaner and got rid or quite alot of the registry and also I opened Wise Registry cleaner and it found 200 problems.. I cleaned them up so hopefull it will be ok now.

Ok.. I have just turned on my laptop. 11 minites it took this time.
I typed in my password and took about 4 minites on the blue welcome screen and another 7 minites to actually start up.
I couldn't open firefox for some reason, it just wasn't opening, So I had to use internet explorer.

I have uninstalled Norton 2009 and will never install it again. I installed Avast (for the time being) and restarted.. it came on straight away.

3 gigs of RAM and 200GB or HDD space. 11 Minites.. not for me thank you.

If this is your first time using Avast, I recommend let it run a full scan of the system to build up its database. Also let it generate at least once, the VRDB.

Enjoy Avast, I personally prefer it, since it works well with my comps.

    cheers ...

yeah I checked everything and it said fixed.
I even did a full system scan when it found 2 high risk viruses that Avast didn't detect aswell as 2 low rick viruses.
But it still continued to be slow.

I might try NOD32 next as I havn't tried that before. I didn't like Avaria very much.

I'd be more concerned about the FOUR viruses it apparently found...

Even if NIS cleaned them, I'd say that's as good a sign as any to do a clean wipe and fresh install - would you really trust a compromised system like that?

I was also leary of Norton due to past experience. 2009 is completely different. I've been pretty happy with it.

I am experiencing the same thing as the original poster of this thread. What I have noticed is that Norton Internet Security runs a scan before the Wireless adaptor and other programs show up on the toolbar. After the scan is complete, I can finally access the internet or other programs. As you can imagine, it is pretty frustrating. This is especially true as you read so many positive responses about NIS 2009's speedy performance.

Early load is and has been turned off. I can't type anything until the scan has run.
