I'm running NIS 2009, and have been having a few issues with printing to a shared printer. The application I'm printing from freezes, stops responding, and then Norton proudly pops up about how it blocked incoming traffic either from XXX-PC (192.168.1.100) or from some other really long address. Here's a picture, the blurred out picture being my PC's name :)

I really don't know how to stop this.

Other info: Both computers are Vista 32bit Home Premium. The other PC is connected by USB to an HP Officejet (J5780), installed on my PC with the drivers that came with Vista, and not the bloated ones that came with the printer. Sometimes my print actually goes through and prints though.

Start > type "firewall" > Select option Windows Firewall with Advanced Security

You can check which program is using that port or listening with it.

Umm, how do I do that? Windows Firewall isn't even being used though, Norton's is.

Does NIS '09 have it's own firewall?

I already typed the instructions for checking which program is using that port in my previous post. You can sort the inbound/outbound connections by "local port" by using the columns along the top of the list.

On my computer, the Windows service called Network Discovery uses UDP 5355. If this is the case for your computer, then NIS is getting a false alarm over a Windows component and there is little you can do. Perhaps you can try disabling this service if there is no option to make an exception through the NIS interface.

    What is network discovery?

Yep and it doesn't play nice with Vista's own firewall which is why NIS2009 by default disables it.

turning off network discovery just didn't even let me connect to shared printer. I don't think that's it, but Norton is jsut bugging me everytime I try to connect to this other computer, and "My Network" (under Vista of course) is extremely slow to load, as is viewing this other computer I'm having issues with. It takes a good 30+ seconds. Is norton just buggy with LANs?

You should also search or post your question here; I've had a few issues with NIS2009 and they're always very knowledgeable and helpful. Not that this forum is any different, it's just that over there all they're dealing with are NIS2009-related issues. :)

why not just create a rule for the program in nortons firewall? or see which program is causing it and allow it in nortons firewall settings, you can also try to use the trust control option to add the device to your network settings.

It's any program with a print option at all, which is what concerns me. Norton isn't allowing me complete contact with other computers on my network.

imo i would use the norton removal tool clean the registry and do a reinstall of it. something is odd there..

if that doesnt work then its down to figuring out how the printer is communicating over the network with the computer and why its flagging nis2009. i use a wireless printer for over a dozen pc's and have no issues with nis2009 on any of the ones running it.. and i have the hp l7680

I removed norton, tried using the shared printer, still issues. No norton popup to annoy me, but the program freezes and takes a ridiculously long time to work. Also clicking the network button on the start menu takes a very long time to show me devices. Other computers can see the devices instantly. I also don't see the router as a device while other people do. I don't think its Vista because the other computer is on Vista, but what is going on??
