hey guys, do any of you ever receive the ads on NBR or any forum or any website for that matter, for "Number 1 Rule to a Flat Stomach (obey)" and it links you to nicholle's weight loss story.

i receive it on this website, on my ipod forum, occasionally even on dictionary.com

does anyone else get it, or am i infected like some zombie :(

in case you ask, i have Nod32 AV, and it is updated to the most recent update (it updates hourly, and scans my computer every day overnight).

I don't think it's malware (I thought so too at first since I saw it on almost every page in my IE powered RSS reader, but then I scanned with Avira, Spyware Doctor Starter, and MalwareBytes and came out clean) I get this all the time, heck even Windows Live Messenger has it at the bottom of the buddy list window.

The ad's look like this: [IMG]
    By rickhamilton620 at 2009-01-28

But they also come in variations, some are banner/skyscraper style, other's have animation (the Windows Live Messenger one, for example, deplicts a woman wrapping a tape measure around her waist.

I think those are kinda creepy as well, the way they go "OBEY!" as if it's some sort of ritual. They all link to fake blogs (Maria's, Jennifer's, etc. ) advertising some weight loss drink. Also, the waist's on the before and after's look weird, sometimes belly buttons are missing!

Luckly I only deal with this ad most often in FeedDemon, due to it's use of IE for viewing the webpages of RSS feeds it captures. In Firefox, Ad-Block Plus stops it dead in it's tracks. :)

so you don't think it's a virus, rather, just an annoying ad?

i feel awkward when people come and quickly glance at my computer thinking i'm looking at some 'adult images' because that person has so much skin showing on her stomach haha.

You've been hijacked!!!! There was someone here recently with a similar situation, ads selling enlargement pills for men.

Try running malwarebytes, and/or spybot search and destroy see what they pick up. Also immunize your browser. I think spybot does this.

These ads are definatley not put on by NBR lol.

I read that post and tested out loading pages in both IE and Firefox w/ Ad-Block Plus turned off. Also tried visiting pages that I definitely saw it at through the embedded IE in FeedDemon. Didn't see the ads on NBR or on other sites like MSN, AOL, or others...

I can only assume that it's an annoying ad network, and those ad's just happen to stick around for a few cycle's.... who knows, I could be wrong!

If you are seeing them on NBR you could have worse problems....

    hehe, very true.

btw, i also recommend malwarebyte's antimalware antivirus/spyware program. it's very concise, thorough, easy to use and isn't a resource hog like the mainstream norton and mcafee alternatives.

Every ad i've ever seen on here and DTR are always computer/technology related, using both IE and FF. Van't say i've seen the weight loss add on any other sites either!!

Either you guys have definatley got some funky stuff going on or i'm missing out on enlargement pills and weight loss :D

Might be worth bringing it up with admin if they don't go away, after doing some scans.

I've narrowed it down to Windows Live Messenger, at least for my situation.

Note that regardless, I've haven't seen any of the diet blog ads in NBR at all, just on other sites when WLM is running.

How? When Windows Live Messenger's buddy list isn't being interacted with, the ad area at the bottom of the screen looks like this, and displays ads for MSN services:

    By rickhamilton620 at 2009-01-29

However, as soon as the Buddy List UI detects any user interaction such as mouse hover over items in the buddy list, *BAM* the animated diet blog ad appears.

When the Buddy List window is inactive again, the diet blog ad in WLM disappears and the MSN content appears in the Buddy List window again.

I wasn't putting two and two together until later-whenever the diet blog ad appears in WLM, the diet blog ad's start appearing sometimes in either Firefox w/ Ad-Block Plus off or IE. When the diet blog ad goes away in WLM, the diet blog ads go away in my browsers.

I'm sorry Microsoft, but I refuse to have those ad's take over my computer through your instant messaging program. ...looks like I'm running back to Trillian with open arms....

A general rule is that if you see the same ad all over the place in different programs, you're most likely infected with something. It may not be malicious, just annoying. Try a few different anti-spyware/malware programs to see if one of them can find and remove it.

NBR should only display tech ads, so if you see ads like that, they're not from NBR.

    Your joking right?! :p

Anyway, I've removed WLM and haven't seen the ads anymore.

I will attempt to run anti-virus/spyware scans again just to ensure that there's nothing else hanging around...
