If you use IE you are probably using Tracking protection in IE9 (Inprivate filtering from IE8). Now it is a great way of getting rid of ads and trackers. But it is not actually very good if you are from a small country (like me from Croatia) visiting sites and portals that are not very popular on a global scale, but still are packed with ads and whoknowswhat.

So I managed to "train" my TP in a nice way defeating the ads by their own weapons. It works mostly on smaller ad serving companies that are not so common globally (googleads for example is blocked anyway in many TPLs). I have added EasyList as a TPL and have enabled Personalized List (Tools->Safety->Tracking Protection->Your Personalized List click Enable)

    1. If your favourite site is packed with ads, try to see if it has a little note saying which ad company is serving those ads. Other way is to hover your mouse over the ad and check the url bottom left and see what company is responsible.
    2. go to the site of that company. Now if they are small they would like to brag about their reference list. If you are lucky they will even link and sort it to show off.
    3. Make sure your setting in Tracking protection is set to minimal 3 sites. It will blacklist stuff faster.
    4. open like 10 top sites from that list in new tabs (middleclick by default). Wait until all load.
    5. Check if your tracking protection list is filling with new blocked entries.
    6. Refresh your initial site and see if the ad has gone.

Other good idea is to go to google and type something like "top ten sites in..." and then add your country for example. Then just open those sites in the same way described in step 4. There is a big chance that IE TP will blacklist most of the local advertizing.

I managed to get rid of 99% of all local ads this way. Try and see.

    Cheers!

I personally use a host file for ads. Works really nicely.

This is a good idea as well.
