    Congratulations.

So you mean you haven't got any security software with the system?

In that case, take a look at the sticky free security software thread in the Windows forum... awesome stuff there.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1046 >> security / AV forum

http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=190538 >> best free AV/ firewall / antispyware software thread...

either you could browse through for common combinations, usually its like one good firewall (and I have seen people prefer the Comodo one), one good AV (Avast and Avira are some common, popular programs... u could chose one) and one good antispyware (either threatfire or superantispyware or MBAM for example)...

But if you prefer and if you are not able to decide, post a thread there in that forum, and ask for recommendations from the experts for a complete security package, and they will help you with a perfect combo :) :) Baserk is good in suggesting nice combinations too :) :)

As I said, its better to post such threads in the appropriate forums, where you would get better and quicker response :) Good Luck.

I wasn't referring to that free software thread which is a bit different from the security software thread, but has the link for the security software thread too here... and in any case, I would recommend the OP to take a look here too as the previous poster suggested, for some wonderful Free Windows Softwares available.... for various things, from entertainment to productivity :) :) Good Luck. Cheers.

UMMM....that is what I stated above (below my linky)!! But per usual thank you so much for taking the time to always correct me! But no worries I corrected it, so it would be proper now!

Besides that, the thread also contains free security software!

Further I would also suggest check the system completely, for manufacturing quality as well as the OS performance... and also check things like temperatures and such, just to be sure everything is being fine out of the box.. and you might want to give this a read too >> http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=166532 > great stuff from Les.

Well, I would request the mod's to kindly move this thread to the Windows Security Forum.. I think this will be better answered there

Second, to give you a quick reply, in case u prefer, NIS 2008 is pretty good and NIS 2009 is just out as well...

Further, I personally think its better you have a couple of software like the ones available in the free security software thread, running independently, so that if one has some issues, you could just uninstall / reinstall that one or get in another alternative, rather than changing the complete suite... Also, as you might find out, there is no single security program that catches *all* the bugs out there on the web... So I would suggest having at least 2 or 3 different good tools... you can have one for real time monitoring and a couple of other as a back up on-demand scanning tool.

Well, lets see what the experts have to say :) :) But anyways, while you wait for more options / suggestions, I would recommend you read around to get an idea or two :) Cheers.

Edit: By the way, OP, I just requested a mod to kindly move this thread to Windows security forum. Hope it helps :) Cheers.

After McAfee failed me for the last time, I did some serious research on the various security software products, I don't know if that makes me an "expert" or not... I tried AVG, Kaspersky, Trend Micro, Norton, BitDefender, Panda, ect... and I came to a conclusion that Kaspersky Internet Security is the Best All-in-One Security Suite you can buy right now for several reasons...

    1) Hourly updates
    2) Amazingly low resource usage (compared to the others)
    3) Ease of Use
    4) Low startup time
    5) Intuitive Firewall and AV (does alot of the Allowing and Blocking by itself, this can be turned off...)
    6) Most of all: Great detection (haven't had a virus since)

I hope this helps you in your decision.

I have been using Kaspersky for a few years. I like it. I only run the anti virus though. I don't believe in the suites.

If you don't mind paying and you want an all-in-one suite, I'd recommend Kaspersky's, Avira's or Eset's security suite.
From what I've read in some recent threads, Kaspersky's suite can be bought relatively cheap and it certainly is among the best money can buy.
Searching for a rebate can be worthwile before purchasing.
Remember that the first update will take a while because of all the signature (and other) updates so that might take a while on a slow connection.
Maybe you can do that at a friends place or at school/uni or something?
    Cheers.

    This is what I have:

    ESET Security Suite (includes NOD32)
    SuperAntiSpyware
    Spybot S & D
    SpywareBlaster
    CCleaner

All were free except for the ESET Security Suite (which is well worth the money)

Norton (NIS 2008), the "security suite" that comes with most laptops, is bloatware...a glitzy, resource hog. Pretty face but ugly inside. AND...it literally tries to take over your entire system. Norton (Symantec) wants to make you a customer for life BY FORCE. I have 4 new laptops, and gladly removed it from each one. replacing it with the package I put together above :)

Kaspersky is good. Keys are available for like 10 bucks on ebay (for a year).
For some naughty spyware/adware you can download the free version of Lavasoft Ad-Aware 2008.

Comodo has a a free security suite but it's still in beta. In the meantime, you could try the software in my sig. All free, all highly rated.

Get some back up software and an external HDD.

Bloatware. And when you try to get rid of it, it has already gotten its hooks into your system, like AOL.

Uninstall it, and then run a program like Spacemonger (maps your hard drive) and then see how much it leaves behind.

    u mean previous versions!

because everyone and every review says NIS 2009 is revolutionary

    !the king is back!

    give it a try

this is the return of the king baby

install zonealarm, avg and all those junk freeware's then uninstall and check for their "footprints"
they leave way too much crap on ur system...

use norton uninstaller and it leaves ur system squeaky clean.
with 2009 u dont even need the norton uninstaller. it comes inbuilt

Those glitzy graphics and unnecessary bells and whistles do come at an expense. Give me a good basic anti-virus and anti-spyware that doesn't try to look "Hollywood," as Norton does, and I'm happy.
