does this program use more or less resources than windows defender, and if I switch to this, can I/should I turn windows defender off? again, my biggest concern is using the least amount of resources

You should only have one real-time anti-spyware blocker, but you can have more than one anti-spyware scanner.
    So,
Yes, if you're using SAS Pro, which offers real-time protection.
No, if you're using SAS Free, which is a good on demand scanner.
SAS Free and Pro Comparison here.

And it uses less than 50MB for me to run a complete scan, and I'm using SAS Free :D

I contacted customer service and the sent me an uninstaller. Downloaded the new version and activated with my registration key. Only problem is upgrading doesn't remember settings.

Once I had free, I upgraded to Pro lifetime (after an update I think) for only $20! Well worth it and highly recommended. It uses very low resources.
