Remember, if you already have Avira 9, you can do a Product Update.

Open main window -> Update -> Start Product Update

Here are the instructions on how to disable the Avira AntiVir 9 Personal popup and on how to disable the small update screen.

    Vista Home Premium

    1. Navigate to C:\Program Files\Avira\AntiVir Desktop\avnotify.exe
    2. Right-click avnotify; Go to Properties - Security - Advanced
    3. Look under the Permissions folder for System.
    4. Edit - Traverse Folder / Execute File - Deny - Click OK

    Vista Business/Ultimate/Enterprise & XP Professional

    1. Open Local Security Policy through Start > type secpol.msc in Search box and hit Enter
    2. Click on Software Restriction Policies > Action > create New Software Restriction Policies.
    3. On left pane right-click on Software Restriction Policies > Additional Rules > New Path Rule….
    4. Click Browse and navigate to C:\Program Files\Avira\AntiVir Desktop\ and select avnotify.exe and then click on OK.
    5. Set Security level to Disallowed.
    6. Click Apply and then click OK.

    XP Home

    1. Boot into Safe Mode (Press F8 after boot)
    2. Login under the Administrator account
    3. Navigate to C:\Program Files\Avira\AntiVir Desktop\avnotify.exe
    4. Right-click avnotify; Go to Properties - Security - Advanced
    5. Look under the Permissions folder for a listing of all the system users. Do the following for all the users:
    6. Edit - Traverse Folder / Execute File - Deny - Click OK
    7. Reboot (into Normal mode) when finished.

    To prevent the minimized update screen from ever showing up;

    1. Start AntiVir. Go to Administration; Scheduler.
    2. Right-click on Daily Update; choose Edit job
    3. Click Next until you reach the Display Mode screen
    4. Select Invisible from the drop-down list.

    Cheers.

but choices are maximized, minimized or invisible, I can no longer choose the reduced window, that would so nicely set itself on the top right corner...

I usually select Deny only for SYSTEM and that takes care of the pop-up under any user.

That's the same procedure as for version 8

Any side effects? I thought I'd read that this caused Avira 9 to reboot the computer after updates.

    thanks

I've had Avira 9 on a Vista machine for a while and the method that worked for me, and others here have suggested is this:

(must be using an Administrator account)

    Go to C:\Program Files\Avira\......\avnotify.exe

    Right-click avnotify.exe-> properties-> security-> advanced

Under the Permissions tab click on SYSTEM under Permission entries:

    Edit-> Traverse Folder / Execute File-> deny-> ok ->apply-> yes -> ok-> ok

This is from here, the same as the method for Windows 2000/XP but no need to go to safe mode. Don't forget to add the "/nosplash" entry to the registry (bottom of that page).

    Works like a charm. :)

So it was working and just like that suddenly stopped updating? When you hover over its tray icon what date does it show for last update?

Yeah all of a sudden yesterday it quit working for no apparent reason, strange. I even left the AVnotify alone so I always get the popup message.

My last update was 6/11/09. It's happened in the past on some of my other computers and the only fix was to uninstall then reinstall the AV.

edit: This problem is usually Vista related. On all the computers where this issue arises it's running Vista. The current system i'm referring to, i'm dual booting Vista and XP. In XP it updates fine with zero problems.

I reinstalled Avira and it still was very slow updating. I decided to switch to Avast for the time being.

That's really strange although I have seen related threads on Avira's own support forums; you might want to try there. FWIW, I have Avira on two Vista machines and never experienced this.

You may want to check the Avira forums and see if something is going on. ;)

Or, have you thought of uninstalling, and putting back on your lappy?

I have it on my lappy running Vista, and my Netbook running XP..no probs like this. :(

Yup I uninstalled Avira and then reinstalled it. Still takes forever and a day to update. The updater broke all on it's own. It's happened on my T60 Stinkpad as well as on my Vostro 1700 all running Vista. The T60 developed the problem and so I uninstalled it then installed Avast. Afterwards I uninstalled Avast and reinstalled Avira and then it worked. Hasn't given me a problem since. So yeah the problem is real weird. Sometimes it's fixes itself which is even more bizarre.

I switched to Avast for the time being. It's just as good as Avira just a little heavier on the resource side which isn't a real biggie since I have 3GB of ram.

    Stinkpad..lulz :p :D (sorry I thought that wording was funny) ;)

It's odd that this is happening to you, with the results your having on both lappys!

Well I hope that Avast works out for you til the prob' potentially get's fixed.
I've never used Avast..but lot's of peep's like it. And, it's what works for you that matters most! ;)

Avast is rock solid. That is why I am back to using it again after trying all the freebies out there numerous times. For me, Avast is something I can rely upon, come hell or high water

And a scheduled boot time scan is another thing that Avast offers. As well as password protection to prevent a virus etc. disabling your AV.

Detection rate not quite as good as Avira....but never an issue. Ever.

    Suits me.

I gotta agree plus you can specify which drive(s) you want scanned. I do like Avira's UI. I've had both AV's deny website malware. Avast takes it one step further as it notifies you then replaces the attacking with a blank page on your web browser.

    Updates are reliable too.

You can specify the drive to be scanned in Avira too. That option is under the scanner menu.

I've never had any problems with Avira and 6 scheduled updates a day. Still, if it doesn't work for you, Avast is the next best free AV.

I have the opposite situation from yours. I have no problems updating Avira 9 on any of my XP computers, but on my Vista computers (with similar specs) it takes forever to scan for updates before the download begins. At first I thought it was just a weird coincidence, but it's been like this since I switched from Avira 8 to Avira 9. Would the operating system make that much of a difference?

I have my AVIRA Antivir Personal 9 update everyday.
I have ZERO issues for it.
As long as you configure your AVIRA suit to your system. You would find it takes very very less resources with crazy detection rate and virus database.

Yup! Some people may have issues with AVIRA.
However, I tested AVIRA and AVAST using 2 computers. Insert virus together LOL!
Indeed, AVIRA detect rate is faster than AVAST!
But I think they are about the same. Because AVAST! have its own special feature as well AVIRA.
I love AVIRA Guard-On detection(fast) and autoblock spywares(old, new, unseen and whatever).

The problem I had with Avast 4.8 is that it was more resources-heavy than Avira. On the same machine there was a noticeable difference in performance between the two, in Avira's favour.

Avira is very famous on its damn light resources ability!
    I like Avira very much!
AVG is a resources hog =.=! Avast! still OK not too much as AVG does.

The best layout design I think is AVG, AVG would pawn both AVIRA and AVAST! in term of layout design.

In Avira, do you have to manually run scans? I have 8 installed and I just leave it and let it do its thing.

Also, running on XP Pro, is there a benefit to upgrading to version 9 and since avnotify is already "denied" for 8, will it hold on upgrade?

I set Avira to update 6 times a day and do a system scan once a week. I think the default is one update per day and weekly system scanned that isn't checked.

Although I didn't notice much difference, Avira 9 supposed to also look for malware. I did the upgrade from 8 to 9 and didn't have to disable the nag screen, but did have to redo disabling the start up screen. That said, I have two entries for avnotify, one disallowed and one unrestricted.
