    Hey there,

    I live at a University campus college where we access the internet through a proxy server, which requires authentication and what not.

    Anyways, I have a McAfee anti-virus where it says that my computer is NOT protected and the "detection signature is within 8 to 29 days old". I can't update it. Can anyone suggest a solution?

    Also, my Vista (Home Premium) is not detecting any anti-virus software installed. It says "your computer is not protected'. Any ideas on how to fix this? Thanks.

    First of all, remove any possibly faulty Vista Security Center messages by following these steps;

    1. Stop the Windows Management Instrumentation service. (type 'services' in search and click OK/enter to go to services and then, stop the "Windows Management Instrumentation" service).
    2. Locate the folder "repository" in c:\windows\system32\wbem. Delete only the repository folder.
    3. Now start the "WMI" service back.
    4. Wait for at least 15-20 mins for the system to rebuild the information.
    5. Now reboot and open the security center. If it's not turned ON, turn ON and you will have the right info there.

    Make sure you still have a subscription for your McAfee program. If not, you won't receive any updates anymore. Check your subscription info or contact McAfee customer service.

    You could consider dropping McAfee all together and start using free programs which will perform better, have a lower memory usage and will cost less; less money and less headaches.
    If you don't mind spending money on security programs, next time take a look at ESET/NOD32 and Kaspersky.
