Hello! I currently use McAfee and CCleaner and I have never, ever had any virus problems. I see a lot of users here not like McAfee. I have a high end system, so I never cared much about the footprint. i7 920, 6gb ram, GTX 285. But I have seen some claim that it can cripple computers to half their potential.

I need to know the best paid and best free AV's for my desktop, and a netbook.

Unlike my desktop, I need all the spare memory I can get on a netbook, so the footprint is a concern.

Also, I don't mind using multiple programs if need be.

But, its gotta protect me from virtually anything. My McAfee has:
    1.SecurityCenter
    2.VirusScan
    3.Personal Firewall
    4.SiteAdvisor
    5.Anti-Spam
    6.ParentalControls (although I don't use this)

I need something, or somethings that can do all of this at least as good, or better than McAfee.

Also, something to note, my desktop McAfee is free because of my dad's subscription, so if free McAfee is good to keep, then let me know.

Also, my desktop uses Vista 64bit and eventually Win7 64bit.
My netbook will run XP, and possibly Win7 in the future.

    Thanks!

Download the trial of Norton Internet Security 2009 and see for yourself. You'll be pleasantly surprised. If you like it, and I suspect you will, then just buy the subscription then.

As for free, you got a ton of options. Currently I'm using the beta of Microsoft's Security Essentials and I really like it. It's very low on resources and it already picked up a couple of viruses and trojans on one of my systems.

MS Security Essentials is MORRO right?

Norton Internet Security 2009/2010 is very nice.
It is a complete different thing compared to Norton Internet Security 2008 or lower. McAfee was bad I think, even a free version Avira can do better than it.

I kind of remember someone posting a certain AV product here actually..just can't remember the name..did it have something to do with assassins or snakes? Hahahaha vague.

ATM I use avast!, NIS 2009 and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (heck, I know, a lot, but they don't conflict with each other, better safe than sorry in our country) but I really don't like AVG or Avira..

    EDIT: Saw it.

I knew it had something to do with snakes! And hmm, assassin? Perhaps because of Angelina Jolie's red Dodge Viper in Wanted? lol

Alright, so I did a bit of research and checked out some reviews on this site.

Looks like Norton, Kaspersky, and Eset are considered top tier and better than McAfee.

I need not only computer protection, but internet protection as well. All three of the above companies offer virus protection, and internet protection separate it seems.

    Possible options:

Is Norton 360 3.0 any good, and does that offer both their AntiVirus 2009 and Internet Securtiy 2009 in one package?

Is Kaspersky any good? It looks like they don't have a do it all package, so I would need to get their AntiVirus 2009 and Internet Security 2009 both separate correct?

Is Eset Smart Security 4.0 the combination of their AntiVirus 2009 and Internet Security 2009? Is it any good?

I am looking for one that will cover all my needs for anything. I will also be using CCleaner on my pc as well. Also, I really like McAfee SiteAdvisor, which can be had as a free download, so I would like to know if it is compatable with the above three (of course, only if it doesn't use up my resources).

Also, I would like to get one that will cover both my gaming desktop and my netbook which will only have an Atom N280 and 2gb of ram.

    Thanks for all your help!

Do not use Norton 360 stuffs.
Use Norton Internet Security 2009/2010 which is much superior than Norton 360.
Norton Internet Security mean whole protection package which included anti-virus(virus, spyware, trojan, rootkit and so on) and INTERNET PROTECTION too. There are still some other protection Norton Internet Security provided, hard to mention all. Check its feature/protection here, http://www.symantec.com/norton/internet-security

Thanks for the heads up on that one. I checked their website, they seemed to be advertising the 360 as the all in one package. What about the other two?

Norton 360 is nothing but a resources hog which can slowdown the computer. It gives lame protection as well.
Norton Internet Security 2009/2010 is very nice. Light resources and give superb protection!

What is your opinion of the other two compared to Norton? Does Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 also include whatever is in the AntiVirus 2009 package? What about eset?

    DarkSilver,
I read the description of NIS 2009 but it doesn't mention detection and removal of adaware. Does it do that as well?

The scanner/guard of NIS 2009 should have detection of malware/spyware(adaware) definitely. Even the Free Avira Antivir Personal 9 have it. If the description tells about detect and destroy malware/spyware/trojan/so on, means adaware. Just like some companies named spyware as malware and malware and spyware. It is almost the same stuffs(sometime the same stuffs). If NIS 2009 really don't have it as you mentioned. Then, just download an ADD-ON anti-adaware(free) to your Firefox.

OK, thanks. Its hard to know what covers what anymore. There are just so many names for things that are many times similar. Since I saw all the other **buzz** words but didn't see adware, then I was concerned that it didn't cover it. But I guess the general term malware mean all things...

BTW - I got NIS 2009 yesterday. Can't wait to try it on my machines :D. I am looking forward to comparing it with Avira Free edition that I am running right now.

Yea. The naming is definitely confusing.
Even the security software naming too.
    SUPERAnti- Spyware
    Malwarebytes' Anti- Malware
    Ad-Aware 2009

NIS 2009 is slightly heavier(not much) than Avira. But the overall protection is superb.
